Booker Prize 2012 (AKA books thread because nobody cares about The Booker Prize)
Tan Twan Eng - The Garden Of Evening Mists (Myrmidon Books)
Deborah Levy - Swimming Home (And Other Stories/Faber & Faber)
Hilary Mantel - Bring Up The Bodies (Fourth Estate)
Alison Moore - The Lighthouse (Salt)
Will Self - Umbrella (Bloomsbury)
Jeet Thayil - Narcopolis (Faber & Faber
Apparently Mantel is the favourite. I think I managed about 100 pages of Wolf Hall before I gave up. Like most people, I think. If she wins, this will be the booker prize equivalent of The Godfather Parts 1 and 2 winning best picture. Expect Wolf Hall part 3 to feature Andy Garcia and Mantel's daughter.
The Will Self book is apparently 'unreadable' and 'genius' in equal measures. I can imagine a lot of people buying this, if it wins, because people have heard of Will Self, and it being a charity shop bestseller come 2014 (like Wolf Hall, in fact)
Don't know much about the others. Newcomers, bloody foreigners. Nicola Barker didn't make the cut. None of these books will see the light of day in Poland for another 10 years and I'm not paying import prices. Any one read any / planning to read them.
0 replies. Let's make this the books thread. What are you reading? I'm reading another Paul Theroux book.
