Films I watched this weekend.
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy - Very nice and atmospheric, can feel your skin getting coated in nicotine and beige even just watching it. Toby Jones is wonderful. Still a bit too much die hard-esque bromance in there for me though, and the ending montage although pretty, was still rather 'uhhhhhhm' 8.2/10
Drive - Very pretty film. Ron Pearlman, the other mafia git and him from Malcolm in the Middle's acting allowing easter island head and Casey Mulligan to their 'understated' (ie not a lot) performances. I think I was being a bit indie on twitter the other day saying it wasn't good. It plainly is a good film. But it isn't a masterpiece as some people harp on. Some cracking violence as well. 7.9/10
All the President's Men - Magnificent. Although I'm coming from a rather biased background it's good to see journalism portrayed on screen like that, sifting through unending records, manning the phones, tapping-up ex-FBI heads etc. Redford and Hoffman bounce off each other fantastically, and the sense of paranoia builds up so well (TTSS also did this, but imho this does it better). My one criticism would be though that as it gets more and more interesting, it just ends. Would have been great to see more of what happened in 73/74. 9/10
The Raid: Redemption - Absolutely mental, made even crazier by the version I watched, which had some unintentionally hilarious subtitles. A bit fan-boy and obviously plainly ridiculous, but come on, it's 100 minutes of pure, visceral entertainment. It doesn't pretend to be anything else and I like it for that. Plus it's absolutely bad-ass. 8.5/10
A good weekend, overall.
How about you?
