A Comics Thread
I got a wonderful adaptation of At The Mountains of Madness that reimagines it with some great boys own/Tintin style art for Christmas. It didn't really get the sense of dread across as well as it might but it was a lot of fun. Nicely hinting back at things like The Thing as well as Lovecraft's original.
The latest Walking Dead collection is out. I'm in two minds as to whether to pick it up or not. The series has stalled and lulled in the past and it feels like it's about to fall into another drift. Unfortunately I feel like the premise has been played out now, every arc is a variation on a previous one and there has ultimately been very little progress for quite some time. I know they reached the new safe zone but that fell apart in the same way previous ones did and the character development seems to be slowing as well. It feels like the series could do with some new blood or a real game changer as far as the plot goes, there can't surely be more directionless wandering to go. Maybe something from outside - a fightback again the roamers or something, a lifeline from abroad perhaps.
I was reading an interview with Alan Moore talking about his reinvention of Swamp Thing and how he had to abandon the premise that the title had primarily been built on - Swamp Thing journeying about trying to find ways to become human again - because it was obviously the title would never reach that conclusion and instead just revolved stagnantly around it. Walking Dead feels like it's gone or is going that way.
Speaking of Alan Moore has anyone read any of the newer hipper sexier swinginger League of Extraordinary Gentlemen volumes? I'm kind of put off by the change of setting.
And speaking of 'has anyone read', has anyone read Frank Miller's all macho all sexist all racist Holy Terror where someone WHO ISN'T BATMAN teams up with someone WHO ISN'T CATWOMAN to fight evil evil Islam with macho sexist racist fighting?
I got most of the way through it but apart from all the right-on reasons for not liking it its also just not very good. Dated artwork, achingly uninventive storytelling, I can only imagine that people will be down with it according to the message rather than the work.
Here are some recordings of me doing (unprepared) interviews at Newcastle's Canny Comic Con, including Bryan Talbot.

I've recently started on the third Achewood collection (A Place For Scared People) and that made me take a look to see if the webcomic has restarted again and it has and it is still marvellous.

I haven't read any mainstream superhero comics for awhile so here are some Marvel film trailers:
