christian funerals
so I went to my auntie's funeral today. it was a traditional christian affair. I wasn't aware my relatives were religious at all, but people often turn to it for comfort.
still, it made me quite uncomfortable. it's the first funeral I've been to. seen them on televison, in films, and I recognised the kind of readings that we had at the funeral today. it's just that when it comes to tv, there's no emotional investment, and it never before struck me in any real way how awful the typical biblical fare re: the passing of someone from life into death really is.
it was my auntie's day. not god's day. and yet these passages just go on about how great/important god is, and how in order for our loved ones to not just disappear into oblivion, we all have to entreat some deity. it strikes me as a pretty horrible thing to talk this way with regards to the departed, and the grieving.
this is pretty far from new discussion fare, especially for your average dis-er. but I'd quite like to discuss it in context of your personal experiences with funerals, how it made you feel.
