Korean comic book I think. Not massively NSFW, but you might want to angle your screen away a bit to watch it. And cover your mouth for when you yelp out.
Actually, maybe it is NSFW
Unless your office is alright with people yelling HOLY SHIT

Dyatlov Pass Incident, obvs
The Taman Shud story is bonkers. First I've heard of the others...
i first read about the dyatlov pass incident the other day
terrifying - especially when you see all the pictures of them happy and just chilling out
Fucking hell that's bizarre
Btw this is the best thread ever
arrrrrrrrrrrgggh
JFC that's creepy as all hell, mang.
how will you contain your disappointment?

A casino where I always win. That's boring. I must really be... in Hell!
Deeply unsettling

JFC nearly shat myself
...it turns out its man!
I made a thread on here about the Taman Shud/Somerton Beach mystery about a month ago...
...it is PROPERLY nuts.
The Dyatlov Pass Incident has been mostly explained though, tbh. Their odd behavious, being found without clothes, etc., is quite normal for people experience extreme hypothermia.
well yeah.
but generally people that die of extreme hypothermia don't have skull damage caused by something which had " the force of a car crash"
Avalanche, innit.
They weren't found until weeks after they'd died - the missing tongue was probably torn out by a wild animal, the tans were caused by sunlight reflecting off the snow (as happens in snowy areas), the crushing damage was probably an avalanche which then shifted to reveal the bodies, the lack of clothes and desperate tearing at the tents to get outside is typical 'paradoxical undressing'.
All the other stuff - radiation, aliens, light in the sky, experiments, etc., etc. - wasn't in the original reports of the incident, and all that later stuff was probably added as part of cold war obfuscation.
An avalanche would have got rid of their footprints though
Apparently paradoxical undressing isn't really dementia/hysteria
It's a real sensation of being too hot cos the temperature-regulating bit of the brain messes up or something. So that wouldn't explain cutting the tent open from inside. They probably thought there was an avalanche on it's way.
Lots of this still sounds fucking weird despite some of your explanations there
I've been reading the comments here for hours:
http://www.dbskeptic.com/2008/03/08/the-dyatlov-pass-accident-and-the-fatal-unknown-compelling-force/
When they left the tent they walked downwards
and in the path of any potential avalanche when apparently experienced hikers (which they were) know to go higher and perpendicular. WHY DID THEY GO DOWN, and for over a mile, in their underwear?
Don't know why but can't stop thinking about this
I'm scared of the dark now. My life's ruined.
Interesting.
Although again I should point out that the bits about 'bright balls of light in the sky' and the radiation being in the clothing was likely added later on in the 80s. There's no mention of anything supernatural in the original notes. As someone rightly points out in the comments, it's even weirder that the investigators thought to check for radiation levels in the first place.
The stuff that's in the original investigation notes is the tent ripping, the internal injuries, the missing tongue, and the lack of clothes. Strange, but not quite as strange.
I read that the missing tongue had actually just decomposed
and it allegedly says that in the original report so that one has obviously been distorted over time and should be ignored really.
The bright balls in the sky and radiation stuff is bollocks, as is the 'strange brown tan' stuff. Their dead bodies had been lying there for over a month, they're not gonna look normal.
The missing clothes is due to them having fled the tent in the clothes they were wearing as they slept. Whatever disturbed them was obviously such a threat that they didn't even have time to put shoes on (some of them only had one shoe, others didn't have any on at all.) It's kinda strange that they ripped the tent open considering the entrance to the tent was open when it was found. That either suggests that there was something terrifying at the entrance or the people at the back didn't want to wait behind the others to get out.
The internal injuries were probably from falling into a ravine... though they said they had no external injuries?
But still, we don't know what they were running from. Experienced hikers have said that fleeing the base like that in those temperatures would only happen if the option of staying meant certain death. I keep picturing the situation in my mind and how terrifying the ordeal must have been and it well disturbs me.
I mean, I might be an amateur at this...
..but I'm pretty sure there are some injuries you can have which don't show up on the outside, like broken bones. And if you hold ice over a bruise it stops it being as bad, they were surrounded by snow, so... yeah, I don't think it's that weird.
The explanation someone posits in that thread seems to make the most sense to me - a small snowdrift was mistaken for an avalanche, and they got out of the tent as fast as possible to get to the shelter of the trees. They fixed their one torch to the roof of the tent to try and mark it so they could get back, and then they tried to build a fire while they waited to see if there would be a big avalanche. Then some of them tried to get back to the tent, they got lost or whatever and ended up freezing to death, then the ones by the trees also tried to find their way and got lost, a couple fell down a ravine...
Just a series of small, likely explanations to everything, really. I don't mean to take the fun out of it, but for something that's brought up all the time as an example of a baffling mystery, it just doesn't seem like it to me.
I'd agree completely if it were not for the fact that they walked downwards
and in the path of any potential avalanche when they know in those circumstances to not do that, cos they're experienced innit. But yeah, it could just have been that they didn't want to stand around on a mountain slope waiting for an avalanche and thus freezing to death so instead wanted to try and wait it out at the forest where they could build a fire. That explanation is probably correct yeah. The snow/no external wounds thing sounds right too.

Smolensk, Russia
Polish Air Force
Tupolev 154M
101
The military jet crashed and was destroyed while attempting to land in dense fog and poor visibility. The crew requested permission to carry out a trial approach to a decision height of 100 m and told the controller to expect a go-around. A few seconds before impact, the autopilot and autothrottle were disconnected in order to execute a go-around. The airplane impacted upsloping terrain at a distance of about 1,100 meters from the runway and 40 m to the left of extended centerline. The immediate cause of the accident was the failure of the crew to make a timely decision to proceed to an alternate airport although they were not once timely informed of the actual weather conditions at Smolensk, which were significantly lower than the established airport minima. Descent without visual contact with ground references to an altitude much lower than minimum descent altitude for a go-around, in order to establish visual flight. No reaction to the numerous TAWS warnings which led to controlled flight into terrain, aircraft destruction and death of the crew and passengers. Polish president Lech Kaczynski and his wife were among the 96 people killed.

Some kind of explosion in the hold scared the passengers and crew, so they all loaded onto the lifeboat and decided to trail behind the main ship while the alcoholic fumes dissipated, but some idiot forgot to tie the lifeboat to the ship...
Well, that's a solid theory.
But Occam's Razor tells us the simplest solution is usually correct, so I'm afraid it was probably alien abduction.

Timothy King, 11, borrowed 30 cents from his older sister and left his home in Birmingham, skateboard in hand, to buy candy at a drugstore on nearby Maple Road on Wednesday, March 16, 1977, at about 8:30 p.m. He left the store by the rear entrance, which opened to a parking lot shared with a supermarket, and vanished.[2] An intensive search was executed that covered the entire Detroit metropolitan area, and there was widespread media coverage, already heavy with coverage of the previous three slayings. In an emotional television appeal, Timothy's father, Barry King, begged the abductor to release his son unharmed. In a letter printed in the Detroit News, Marion King wrote that she hoped Timothy could come home soon so she could serve him his favorite meal, Kentucky Fried Chicken. In the late evening hours of March 22, 1977, two teenagers in a car spotted his body in a shallow ditch alongside Gill Road, about 300 feet south of Eight Mile Road in Livonia, just across the county line in Wayne County. His skateboard was placed next to his body. His clothing had been neatly pressed and washed. He had been suffocated and sexually assaulted with an object. The postmortem showed that Timothy had eaten fried chicken before he was slain.

Thanks to this thread I've just spent most of my Friday evening reading up on serial killers
Grim.
serial killers are serial killers
but that Maura missing person thing is the grimmest thing of all. She kept crashing her car, refusing help then disappearing. Somehow that's the grimmest thing for me.
I find that the least grim
and like to think she was just determined to do a runner, which she eventually did.
It's utterly mental to me
that people can just disappear without a trace in the modern world, without leaving some kind of trail or being seen somewhere. That Maura thing is proper creepy.
yep
the same reason the madeleine mccann disappearance is so weird and creepy. the wikipedia for 'sightings of madeleine mccann' is horrible.
really?
not to be contrary or anything, it's a big world
Really wish I hadn't clicked on this thread
:(
The Taman Shud case is pretty weird and all
but it gets properly fucked up when you get down to the bit about the possible connection to the Mangnoson case, with the dead toddler and the weird stalker and threatening phone calls. I bet that has some fucking dark shit behind it, yet they just tossed it off as a tragedy and hoax calls. So grim.

Excellent build up, ruined by laying it on too thick in the final third.
I don't get the ending.

Which bit?
Rough synopsis: He starts having hallucinations and seeing odd things around his house, gets really depressed. Feels compelled to go somewhere, goes there, sees mate who is having same problems. Says that all three cavers feel like they have to go back and investigate the cave, says he'll update soon when they come back safely. There is no further update.
The last journal entry has a 'next' page that leads nowhere..
Or a page missing.. Why would he put a link to a missing page?
It's meant to give you the willies, innit?
It subtly suggests that he never made it back from that last expedition.
It's 100% a work of fiction but I guess you could say that he prepared the ground for the next update by linking to the page but never got to actually make the page.
I dunno, it's just a creepy bit of fiction!

this thread has been terrifying me for a few days now
cheers guys. i'm glad this forum only supports text and i don't have to see all the horror at once.
i remember a while back someone posted this horror/weird fiction website, similar to a wikipedia but concerning different research projects at a facility... i can't remember for the life of me what it was called. there was an indestructible monster, a man who appeared to eb the devil, and a machine the size of a room that had different settings and they tried feeding it various items just to see what the result would be.
can anyone enlighten me??
it's either
http://creepypasta.wikia.com or, http://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/
i don't really like those fake things though - not realistically horrifying enough and some of them are just shite like THE RAKE
Only the fool or the brave man dare speak illeth of The Rake
it was the scp link
thanks! would never have found it myself.
Can't believe you said that about The Rake
The rake IS really shit though
I was born and raised in Adelaide
The most notorious place in Australia for weird murdery shit. I used to go swimming as a kid at Somerton Beach where that guy was found. :/
I'm glad someone mentioned the Beaumont Children disappearence. Very strange.
Here are some other Adelaide goodies:

It's getting a couple of screenings here:

Otherwise it's available on those illigal download websites as it's just been released on DVD in OZ.

UFOS!
There was brief silence until he said "it is hovering and it's not an aircraft".[1] This was followed by 17 seconds of unidentified noise, described as being "metallic, scraping sounds",[7] then all contact was lost.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valentich_Disappearance
Guido Valentich also told the AP that "his son used to study UFOs as a hobby using information he had obtained from the air force."
I liked this until I read that bit. Typical.
Didn't see that.
Cheers for ruining everything, one sheet.
my favourite UFO story is this:

FREAKY DEAKY

One for Jonathan Creek
Exactly what happened on that Friday evening cannot be said for certain. It is believed that the older couple, as well as their daughter Viktoria and her daughter Cäzilia, were somehow all lured into the barn one by one where they were brutally slaughtered. The perpetrator(s) then went into the house where they killed two-year-old Josef who was sleeping in his cot in his mother’s bedroom, as well as the maid, Maria Baumgartner, in her bed-chamber.
A few days prior to the crime, farmer Andreas Gruber told neighbours about discovering footprints in the snow leading from the edge of the forest to the farm; however, there were none leading back. He also talked about hearing footsteps in the attic and finding an unfamiliar newspaper on the farm. Furthermore, the house keys went missing several days before the murders, but none of this was reported to the police.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hinterkaifeck
:'(
The autopsy also showed that the younger Cäzilia had been alive for several hours after the assault. Lying in the straw, next to the bodies of her grandparents and her mother, she had torn her hair out in tufts.
the image i find most chilling
is the footsteps in the snow coming from the woods, with no footsteps going back the way. it seems like the fella from the village may well have been the guy who did it, but a couple of things about it don't make any sense...why hide in the attic for days if he lived so close to the house?
I'm not sure I understand why everyone loves the Taman Shud thing
Unidentified dead man found on beach...oh noes?
Did you actually read it?
It's like something out of the X-Files!
Whoa, weird stuff.
The film I am Number 4 is on on my tv and a character said 'My entire childhood has been like an episode of the X Files' just as I read this post! D:
Not enough choppy chop and rapey rape?
Not enough Victorian children being killed in a rush for treats more like
If you like chilling though, the arrest of Dennis Nilsen seriously gives me the willies
Nilsen queried why the police would be interested in his drains, so the officer told him they were filled with human remains. "Good grief, how awful!" exclaimed Nilsen. "Don't mess about, where's the rest of the body?" replied Jay. Nilsen responded calmly, admitting that they were in two plastic bags in his wardrobe.

Great article
I'm mildly obsessed with this sort of thing now, I've downloaded the Conet Project discs
sure it's another serial killer thing but i find this especially creepy
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freeway_Killer
<<The Freeway Killer was a nickname given by the media—and later police forces—to what they believed was a single serial killer claiming victims in California, USA during the 1970s and often dumping the victims along the freeways. However, there turned out to be three Freeway Killers who operated independently of each other, but just happened to select similar victims from similar locations.>>
<<The trio of killers claimed at least 110 victims between them. None of them knew each other during their crime sprees, although Bonin and Kraft became acquainted while on Death Row.>>
so three seemingly identical serial killers operating in the same place at the same time then.
and then this detail about one of them:
<<It was also discovered that Kraft kept a coded list of 61 neatly-printed terms and phrases such as "JAIL OUT" and "EDM" in his car. Upon closer investigation, the 61-item list was later discovered to be a cryptic "scorecard" of his many victims---"JAIL OUT" referring to 23-year-old Roland Young (released from the Orange County drunk tank hours before his murder) and "EDM" referring to the initials of Edward Daniel Moore. The list also included four double murders, leading to a total of 65 listed victims. Two of the victims, Eric Church and Terry Gambrel, appear unlisted for unknown reasons. However, since the list is in code, the possibility exists that Eric Church and Terry Gambrel are listed in a way that investigators cannot recognize, which would lead to a total of 67 listed victims. 22 out of the listed 67 victims remain unrecovered and unidentified.>>
<<To date, 22 of Kraft's 67 estimated victims remain unrecovered and unidentified. This is due in part to the killings occurring throughout several states with bodies dumped in varying locations.>>

This one's a classic
and makes for an interesting read. Unbelievable they actually got away with this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_MKULTRA
Related to MKULTRA:
LSD was popularised as a recreational drug when many of the early proponents of the drug (Ken Kesey and Timothy Leary, for instance) volunteered to take part in government experiments for a bit of extra cash.
Just read about the Maury Island incident which was one of the first
UFO sightings. Also one of the first recorded cases of the Men In Black. I didn't actually know the film was BASED ON A (possible) TRUE STORY.
Anyway, the captain of the boat who saw the 6 objects was greeted my a MAN IN BLACK the next morning and was invited out for breakfast. He was told to be quiet or bad things would happen. He didn't. Him and his boss (who would later be a JFK assassination suspect!) went immediately to the press and collected some debris that had fallen from one of the objects.
These samples and photographs went missing. One of their sons vanished and was later found working in a restaurant in Montana not knowing how he got there stating amnesia. Another witness was oddly recalled to Army service and deployed to Alaska and then Greenland.
The main guy flew to meet with military officials and on his return flight the engine froze mid air but he was able to land the plane safely.
A journalist who was helping them died 2 weeks later. The cause was undetermined.
Air investigators were sent to conduct interviews with everyone involved and on their return journey the plane crashed. Both died.
Also of note is that Roswell happened 12 days after this.

Edward Mordrake (sometimes written Edward Mordake) was reportedly the 19th century heir to an English peerage. He supposedly had an extra face on the back of his head, which could neither eat nor speak, although it could laugh and cry. Edward begged doctors to have his "demon head" removed, because, supposedly, it whispered horrible things to him at night, but no doctor would attempt it. He committed suicide at the age of 23.

Hedviga Golik
THE remains of a woman have been found sitting in front of her TV - 42 years after she was reported missing.
Hedviga Golik, who was born in 1924, had apparently made herself a cup of tea before sitting in her favourite armchair in front of her black and white television.
Croatian police said she was last seen by neighbours in 1966, when she would have been 42 years old.

I still get horrible images in my head sometimes from this thread. The Tara Calico photo still haunts me as I go to sleep.
You mean it's not your facebook profile pic?
I think that would set a new record
for most de-friendings in one day.
Up for a challenge?
I'll do mine if you do yours. Whoever loses the most friends buys sandwiches.
I got sucked into reading some theories about Tara Calico's disappearance last night. It's an unpopular theory, but some people believe that she and the little boy were abducted and sold into some sort of slavery or sex ring. That thought disturbs me so much, but not as much as the damn photo. The girl looks just like one of my friends when she was about 14. :(
Not scary but just horrible :'(

I watched this documentary last night:
http://cropseylegend.com/
Kids on Staten Island grew up with the urban legend of Cropsey -- he was apparently an escaped mental patient that roamed the woods at night snatching up children. In the '70s and '80s, children did start going missing on Staten Island and it was like the Cropsey legend had come true. The documentary is really interesting, as it examines the case of the man that was later charged with the kidnapping and murders of two of the missing children. There seem to be connections with Satanic cults. All in all, pretty chilling.

great article - the whole thing is supremely creepy and sad.
interesting to see him tweeting about how the cruise itself was very nice
it is still all very sinister though. imagine if there were hotel chains that had guests disappear.
kind of similar (and an interesting read)
http://www.vanityfair.com/culture/features/2010/12/vanishing-blonde-201012?currentPage=all
After a woman living in a hotel in Florida was raped, viciously beaten, and left for dead near the Everglades in 2005, the police investigation quickly went cold. But when the victim sued the Airport Regency, the hotel’s private detective, Ken Brennan, became obsessed with the case: how had the 21-year-old blonde disappeared from her room, unseen by security cameras?

I'm pretty sure that's sort of based on the idea in some way.
Nope.
Never read any Christie actually. Should probably address that.
Well not necessarily.
Just watch the three Peter Ustinov films and the Albert Finny film of Orient Express.
Orient Express is one of her better ones so pick up a copy by all means but don't expect characters. There is an interesting line in the book (written c. 1936) where the German maid, referring to the evil kidnappers, says something like, "We Germans could never be so wicket".

I was out sick from work with a bad bout of laryngitis for part of last week so I decided to do some research into the Deep Web, which someone mentioned earlier in this thread.
Jesus Christ, it's terrifying. 99% of the Deep Web is benign (university databases, email inboxes, etc.) but there are some very, very disturbed people out there. There are some threads on Reddit posted by people much braver than I that ventured out into the Deep Web.
link?
There were a few of them
but this was the most extensive thread. Enjoy!
http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/hphpd/i_browse_the_deep_web_ama

I just came here to post something I read about the deep web this evening
http://www.sickchirpse.com/2012/02/12/deep-web-browser/
What a chilling thing just to be able to buy a hitman like it's a loaf of bread
I'm still at work
(West Coast represent!) but when I get home, I'll try to find some of the other links in which brave explorers to the Deep Web posted screenshots of things that they had found. Some of it was so incredibly disturbing that I actually had trouble sleeping that night. Some of the stuff I've read says that some of the stuff on the Deep Web is just trolling taken to another level, but it still scares the hell out of me.
is it possible to have been on a deep wed site without realising it?
i'm thinking of something like rotten, which was a big gross out hit with us when we were in high school.
Unless you were running a TOR browser,
probably not. Things from the Deep Web do occasionally show up on the "regular" internet -- for example, a lot of the people on /b/ lurk on the Deep Web then post disturbing shit on 4chan. It quickly gets taken down because it's too gross even for 4chan.
I learned way too much about the Deep Web while I was sick. The CIA is probably going to show up at my house any day now!
Probably the worst thing I've ever read on the internet came from the deep web
Apparently there's this guy, now I'm not sure how true this is but there was an onion site for it and everything... Looked incredibly legit... Sorry I'm procrastinating because I don't want to retell this story because it's horrific but...
There's this guy who lives somewhere in eastern Europe... And apparently he takes kids from orphanages because they have over crowding problems over there, and he takes these kids and he paralyzes them so they can't move but they can see etc. and he removes their arms and legs so they're like flipper babies, and sells them to people and explains how to take care of them in great detail and he talks about it so frankly and fuck it's just the worst thing in the world. I'd look for the story but I really don't want to.
Thanks for listening. I'm going to go dip my head in a sink of cold water while screaming about how unjust this world is then go and pray that this kind of thing doesn't actually happen.
This is what I'm talking about!!
I found one that was basically like a "mad scientist" -- don't remember where he was, but he would essentially kidnap people that "wouldn't be missed" (i.e. the homeless, prostitutes, etc.) and then do medical experiments on them. I honestly didn't read any further because even if that's just massive trolling, it's enough to give me nightmares. :'(
That's the one!!! :(
It wasn't only what he did though, it was the way he was so casual and professional about the whole thing, and went into great detail about what you'd have to do to keep them alive... And the way they'd still be alive but completely helpless... Made me wonder if it's even possible for people to be that evil... Just horrible.
It was enough for me never to investigate the deep web ever again.
Yeah from now on,
I'm sticking to the Reddit threads from people that got ripped off trying to buy drugs on the Deep Web.
I know that one
it's a fake.

All three of these articles were incredibly interesting. I'd read a bit about Etan Patz. Somewhere up thread, I linked to the documentary "Cropsey" about a string of missing children cases in New York in the late 70s and 80s.
I'd never heard of Barbara Follett but her story was incredibly interesting and heartbreaking. She disappeared from my former home, Brookline, MA, which makes it even more chilling.
I had never heard of the Georgia Guidestones, either. How strange are they? I wonder who has been responsible for the vandalism...

The Sweet Jimmy one is hokey as fuck
but also harrowingly sad. That list of what happened to most of Ali's opponents, jesus christ.
The cruise disappearances is quite an eye opener.
that one is not scary as such
obviously those crew members are committing suicide, or otherwise going off the edge whilst in pursuit of extremely ill-advised shabs and bants. What is an eye opener is how frequently it happens, and how easily Disney and the like have been able to file it under the carpet.
Barbara Follett :(
I read that one last night. I predict a Hollywood movie within our lifetime.

Late last week, there were terrible tornadoes in the American south and midwest. Some people are convinced that these tornadoes and other natural disasters are actually caused by HAARP. The Wikipedia page is pretty straightforward, but there are all sorts of websites and books out there about the conspiracy theory surrounding this. It's also linked to Chemtrails. Spooky!
hmmmm
if we're going to go off the basis that batshit conspiracy theories are spoooky we'll need a whole new thread..
reposting things is lazy I know

The Naree Pon are tiny humanoid creatures from Thailand that are believed to be a cross between an animal and a plant. Buddhist legend says they were beautiful women that grew from a tree like fruit, then would jump off the branch to sing and dance for a couple of weeks and then shrivel up and die.
Scientists in Thailand have studied them but are stumped. I think they knew that the scientists at the US will do even better so they sent in a sample. What the scientists got from their findings was that it's plant material with other unknown materials. They also did an x-ray of it but no bone structure was found however there are external bone-like structures like a jutting vertebrae like thing at the back. The "specialists" also said that the fetus have big heads.

Mason County Sheriff George Johnson commented that he believed the sightings were due to an unusually large heron he termed a "shitepoke".
This guy should name every newly discovered animal.
Mothman is the cryptid
that frightens me the most. My parents live in a neighborhood that borders a forest. When I lived there and came home after dark, I'd make a mad dash into the garage because I was convinced the Mothman was lurking in the woods. :(
No, my parents don't live in Pennsylvania so there's no reason for this. Mothman just really scares me.

i don't say this lightly
but the video footage of this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Station_nightclub_fire
is probably the most disturbing, harrowing thing i've ever seen. discretion advised, if you are going to watch the video i advise turning it off halfway through because it goes all the way. one image in particular has stayed with me...
but the whole thing is terrifying: the sheer speed it happens, the visible panic (the guitarist on the left at the start of the video was killed, incidentally, and the 'oh shit' look he does..yeah, pretty grim stuff)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devil%27s_Footprints
Houses, rivers, haystacks and other obstacles were travelled straight over, and footprints appeared on the tops of snow-covered roofs and high walls which lay in the footprints' path, as well as leading up to and exiting various drain pipes as small as four inches in diameter.
