Life changing decisions
Ever made any?
It's a phrase that gets knocked around a bit like a Johnson loose ball, but I wonder how many people have moments in their life where they think, 'if I'd done that life would have been really different'?
There are obvious things like who you decided to marry, kids etc but I'm thinking more mundane things, which would make convenient plot devices in Back to the future 2.
I can think of a couple. Uni was the big one. I could have gone to uni and studied English Literature and avoided paying fees, but the Deputy PM sent out letters to all of us students saying that if you did a Foundation course in Art you'd still be exempt from paying them in an effort to get more people signing up to the course.
Predictably I decided to do that and see where it took me, and ended up with £12,00 of student debt accordingly. But the really big decision came on that course. I'd applied to go to Kent and Norwich to do Graphic Design, got into both and opted for the former.
But on the way to college the day of sending off my form, I bumped into an ex-tutor. Our course was in turmoil, with a new manager having fired 6 of our 8 really good tutors (several of whom are now vaguely famous), and so we'd had no guidance from November through to March pretty much.
He asked where I was going, and I said Kent and he told me I was making a massive mistake. He informed me of the employment rate of Norwich students, the quality of the course etc and I ended up taking his advice. I went on to get a job pretty easily and loved the place, whereas several friends who went to Kent found the course poor and struggled to ever do anything with their qualification.
So there you go, that's mine.
your turn.
