Thursday Gaming Thread: DATABLAST EDITION
Divided into smaller bits so you can read the bits that you're interested in:
Call of Duty: Black Ops
The biggest game of the year (probably) gets released. Generally reviews seem favourable, though they were for MW2 as well and from what people tell me it didn't deserve them. Criticisms I've seen on Facebook and in some reviews suggest it's unnecessarily violent in places and that the single player campaign is yet again far too short. But you kids all buy it for the multiplayer right?
Generally, the Xbox 360 seems to have the best version with the DSi the worst. All 3D modes suck ass. The Wii version, despite having no screenshots released prior to release, is supposedly ok too.
They're already promising patches and DLC to sort out hackers and bugs. But I do sense a general backlash towards the game bubbling away. Eurogamer ended their review by saying that Treyarch got away with one more tweak to the winning formula this year. Next time around, they won't be so lucky.

KINECT
It's out there! For a mere £150. Reviews are luke warm averaging 5s and 6s for the launch titles, with the space needed to play it becoming a real issue if there are multiple players. Microsoft do their usual thing and have a battle with Sony about sales, stats and specs, ignoring that Nintendo did this for 2 years as well and nearly lost their fanbase after failing to bring out any... you know, games. I doubt it'll trouble Wii or Move for some time.

GOLDENEYE WII
Well I took the plunge and got it as Eurocom did Dead Space: Extraction brilliantly, and it is indeed really very good. I don't own a PS3 or Xbox so it's a big leap from the PS2 shooters of old to me. The story is amazingly authentic to the film (and therefore original game), some nice touches remain (like the side missions on harder difficulties and 4 player split screen) but the whole thing is very much a 2010 title. Graphically it's way beyond what I've seen on the Wii to date, the music and effects are spot on, the enemy AI generally pretty good (barring a few too many soldiers who like looking at walls) and the levels always through up multiple routes and nice touches.
It's a big single player campaign too. After 8 hours or so, I've just hit the tank level so expect another 4 or 5 to come yet?
Tried it online briefly and it's great but barring the odd personal match against a mate or two, I'll never be a big online gamer.
Highly recommended.
