another Breaking Bad thread
finally up to speed. just seen the end of season 3.
some thoughts:
obviously incredible, probably the best thing currently running. bryan cranston is obviously amazing. jesse, hank, and saul as well in particular are some of the best supporting characters i've seen in television. and tuco was incredible. And the dark humour is incredible. AND it features some of the best tense scenes ever.
HOWEVER, i remember often reading that it's a slow burner, gets better as it goes along, etc, etc. I don't see this - I knew it was incredible as soon as I saw the basement plate scene in season 1. and the pilot was amazing too. Season 2 was even better with about 6 or so totally exceptional episodes - and while it's obviously arced and stuff, i find it refreshing that so many of the episodes are/were amazing as standalone pieces of entertainment - the scene/episode with Tuco's uncle, the episode where Badger gets arrested, etc etc.
BUT, season 3 while pretty good overall, is surely a step below? Goes to prove that the plane crash while being an awesome set-piece and WOW piece of tv had no real relevance to anything in the show and was pretty gimmicky/pointless. The fat ronaldo twins were awful all-round and pretty useless. The lab stuff isn't as compelling as them in a van. I know there're a lot of clever links, and it's good storytelling in a Wire-esque sense that peripheral characters come and go when relevant to the plot and not vice versa, AND the development of walt and jesse during season 3 has been good. Gus is pretty good but feels like a bit of a missed oppurtunity. Admittedly the last two episodes salvaged it and were probably, and the scene in the middle with Hank having Jesse and Walt trapped were awesome, but overall I thought it was disappointing.
season 1 - 9/10
season 2 - 9.5/10
season 3 - 6/10
totally rambling incoherent thoughts here, sorry. last thought - danny trejo is incredible.
Can't believe it's not back til July '11.
