can we talk about the education system in this country ? (i feel like rambling)
league tables. this means that teaching is entirely focused on getting kids to pass exams, rather than actually learning stuff. every year, teachers get better at predicting what will be in the exam, and they get better at teaching to pass the types of questions which will definately come up. thus results go up every year.
coursework is very easy to cheat on... surely ?
the national curriculum means that teachers get very little choice in what they teach. and it's gonna get worse, i think a friend told me. it also means that teachers have a fuck load of paper work to do.
school get given their money for the year, and have to spend it on equipment AND their teachers pay. for my mum (v. experienced and
top of the pay ladder primary school teacher) this means that no one wants to employ her. they can employ an NQT for 000's of £ less each year, and spend the difference on books/coffee. she's just got a full time job at her school after wanting one for about 5 years. she spent a while looking at other schools but didn't get offered a single position. all the positions went to NQTs.
the expansion of higher education means young people can put off the painful reality of the real world for longer, by learning fuck all. then they get surprised when no one wants to employ them.
however, the student loans company are going to get seriously screwed in the ass in future. my student loan debt is about £24k and i didn't even get the full allowance. i would have to get a job paying well over £20k a year just to pay of the interest on my debt each year. i don't the the SLC are gonna get all of their money back. not at all. the system as it currently stands means that i don't have any incentive to pay it back quicker than i'm forced to. but if they change it, i'm FUCKED.
teachers can't just give a kid a smack if they're being a little shit. it's almost impossible to get a kid thrown out of school. so the kids who don't want to do work will never do any work.
this collection of random tl;dr thoughts was brought to you by the same frame of mind as my thread about benefits. either it will be the same as that thread (i get called a penis) or no one will respond.
ho hum.
i googled for a teacher joke but they were all shit.
