Bidisha's done it again!
http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2010/jul/30/casual-sexism-misogyny
They should give her a sitcom
Scene: busy coffee shop
shop assistant: hi bidisha, the usual?
bidisha: yes please
shop assistant: there you go, and there's your change.
bidisha: she doesn't look like that you know.
shop assistant: ... what?
bidisha: the queen. She doesn't look like that. Face-on she looks very feminine but they put her in profile on the coins because of the patriarcal hegemony, you know?
shop assistant: yeah I guess...
all: oh bidisha!
theme tune plays
bidisha looks down camera a shrugs

anyway if you didnt bother reading the article its basically about casual sexism existing. Which we're all aware of, hopefully. Except its by bidisha! so naturally the whole column is devoid of any interesting points, of a feminist type or otherwise, and of course the focus is really all on herself and her experiences rather than the society she's meant to be dissecting! Hurrah!
I honestly can't believe the guardian lets her write. Its almost like she went in and harassed them until they went "oh alright we'll stick you in the back of the G2 just leave us alone?". Kinda dilutes the space for anything serious to be said on the subject of gender equality, but then again doesn't everything Bidisha?
