Gutted. Always thought he'd just make it. Looks like Bobby Charlton's record is safe. :(
When he stays fit... Opta says it all.
especially for England.
Though this may be nostalgia speaking. He's still got his fantastic finishing, hasn't he?
I bet it'd be better if he started more games and was crocked less regularly though
he's great and seems like a good bloke. Apart from Rooney he's your best forward and none of you have said it for years. Idiots. Tragic if he doesn't get to the World Cup and some talentless mong like Heskey does. Seriously. Owen is brilliant.
In terms of goals per minutes on the pitch, only 3 strikers are ahead of him in the premiership, Rooney being the only other English player.
But playing crouch with rooney up front is the only way you're going to get past the group stages in south africa.
And kirkland in goal.
Owen was actually alright in Madrid, but everyone thought he was a knob, like woodgate.
well, not last season obviously, but everything went to shit last season.
It might be time to make enough appearance (do subs count?) to finally collect himself a Premier League winners medal and retire
Only need 10. I'm gutted he's injured, I guess I'll have to let go!
About for years ago I thought he was nailed on to beat the Charlton Record. And it's a massive loss for England that it's all gone to pot.
The problem is that, whilst it's pretty unlikely he's the solution to England problems it's scarcely more likely the other options are either. I mean if you're taking four strikers you've got Rooney who's obviously great, Crouch who scores regularly for England so should probably go, then a bunch of players who probably aren't going to score goals. Heskey seems to improve the team and maybe should go just because somebody has to and none of the other options are much better.
Defoe has proven time and time again he's not a good enough striker for international level, Bent has shown plenty in his appearances so far to suggest he's probably not a good enough striker for international level, the Jury's stlll out on Carlton Cole and then there's people like Zamora and Abonlahor who are yet to prove they aren't good enough but you suspect it's probably true. So who the hell do you take as a fourth striker? I guess the logic is at least Owen has at one point proven he was good enough even if it was some years ago. And if you've got Beckham's in the squad despite not contributing much these days on the off-chance he'll stand still and kick a ball into the penalty area pretty well, then why not include Michael Owen who might just stand still a kick it into the net.
Don't get me wrong - I'm not suggesting he should have gone to the World Cup. Just that he's not a much worse suggestion that most of the other not-very-good suggestions. It'll probably be Defoe and that's probably the right decision on balance but he is very much the best of a mediocre bunch.
