Weekend Winter Olympics Observations
Because we need another thread, especially one that takes a sideways look at stuff.
1) Short track speed skating is a very exciting sport to watch. Doesn't last very long, builds up to a climatic finish and involves people falling over and crashing. What more could you want? Someone called Apollo Anton Ohno perhaps? Oh the silver bridge, oooooh the silver bridge. Great name but slightly annoying face. Watching the two Koreans wipe each other out in the final was a joy, as was seeing a Dutch man finish second by stumbling across the line on his knee in a previous round and a British bloke take advantage and finish 3rd in the same round.
2) Moguls. Who came up with this 'sport'? Fairly entertaining to watch but jesus christ if that wasn't the result of some drunken/stoned brainstorming then I don't know what is. Very annoying American woman won, why was she annoying? Because her bunches poked out of her hat and she whooped and hollered in an obscene manner.
3) The Luge. Time to get serious, the unexpected death of any innocent young person is tragic but the death of someone who was doing something that was probably the absolute pinnacle of his life and his familys life is even more so. Some things just aren't right and this is one of them.
Back to being pithy. I didn't stay up to watch the last round after midnight last night but I presume Felix Loch (German wunderkid) won as his lead was pretty unassailable. Honourable mentions to the least British man since Rusedski, AJ something or other. Lots of moody German sounding Italians in this event. Also kudos to moody Italian bloke (previous winner, but have forgotten his name) for being the gruffest person on the planet.
In summary - it's strange seeing family holidays taking place in the background of Olympic tv coverage.
