tax returns/housing benefit/jsa/freelance work (whole bunch of practical work questions-centric)
Dear DiS,
Would you be so kind, in your collective expertise, as to answer any of the following questions on which you may be knowledgeable?
If you know you're 80% likely to be unemployed in the near future, and work in a profession where the chances of finding another relevant job between now and then are minimal...
If you claim jobseekers, do you have to apply for things that aren't in your area of work?
Does housing benefit cover your entire rent?
If you do any freelance work (not just in your profession, but like typing, transcribing, bar shifts) I understand this will need to be declared. Is there a threshold above which housing benefit is messed up (i reckon if you earn anything over £50 that week that surely means no JSA)?
I'm really unsure about this one ^, since it seems that, if that's the case, you might actually be better off not getting the scraps of work.
If you do work freelance, then you do your annual tax return, do you have to pay all the tax for the year (like thousands) in a lump sum? How do people do this? Set up an extra bank account and siphon off the tax into it each month and leave it there?
i'm gonna look into this properly nearer the time, but these are a couple of things i've been wondering and, while i don't want anyone to go to any effort here, thought if anyone has experience/info it'd be appreciated.
Many Thanks,
jesus_son
