Up In The Air
Anyone else seen this?
I liked the first two thirds of it a lot. It was sharp and funny, and looked like it was really going to say something about corporate America, how important people's jobs are to them, the nature of transitional spaces like airports, the life of people that don't feel that they need to settle, and the idea of relationships that can be both fulfilling and non-committal. I thought that it was heading for something really special.
But then it just went and lost its way a bit and headed for the safety of a tame, conservative film in which it’s suggested that someone with no family is a lesser person, and that having a job, and the dignity that it affords, doesn’t matter one jot if you don’t have someone to love. I felt like either they didn’t know what to do with the film, or they got scared of having an ambiguous ending in which people are satisfied with a life outside of prescribed ‘norms’.
I dunno. What did everyone else think?
