are the lord of the rings films actually any good?
this is a question i've been asking myself over the last few days
for some reasons i decided that the best medicine for a snow surrounded, cabin feverish day spent indoors would be to plough through the trilogy
i'm onto the third and i'm just trying to work out if the films are actually any good. i can remember watching the first as an excited 13 year old and thinking...'man...that was pretty fucking amazing....'...like...that was my star wars man.
but i'm almost 23 now y'know?.....and watching them again for pretty much the first time since they were released, i think they might be quite shit.
but it's a question that probably has to be split into different sections
1. how good are they in terms of an adaptation
2. how good are they just in terms of their scope and scale and technical acheivement
3. how good are they, apart from these aspects, just as pieces of cinema
i can't really say in terms of the first because i never stuck out the books....
for the second i'd say they are a complete triumph. the worlds created, the attention to detail, the use of the landscape....etc etc
and then the third....i just....i dunno man....i just don't know.
what do you think?
i think it's quite interesting to think about them with the success of Avater...another fantasy epic that might deliver in creating a world but perhaps not a very good film.
but even with avater, i completely believed in the central love story and quite enjoyed the relationship between those two characters. watching LOTR now, i'm not sure i really give a shit about any of the characters or their relationships.
you?
