It will be fun, fun, fun unless you forget the popping candy - Masterchef Unctious Special
And so it's over.
An hour and a half last night (too long? with added X factor background story I'd say yes)
Anyways the 3 final contestants, Earl, Bamos and Woman had to first make a course each, using a Michel Roux Jnr recipe, and then serve it to 30 of the countrys top chefs and foodie type people. Michels Dad and Uncle were there, tedious little french man and tedious touchy the meat french man both from previous episodes were there as were Daniel Caines, Jason Atherton and a number of others. No Kevin Pieterson though but apparently he's gone to work at El Bulli and turn that place around.
Earl was on starters. A steak tartare type thing on some brioche. He had never made brioche before and didn't Michel revel in that fact. No Gregg to be seen, until right at the end where he stood silent just staring at Michel like a confused moon faced child, but Michel was on overdrive, smelling this, tasting that, popping his head up in the background everywhere and at one point he nearly went into one when Earls crisp things burnt at his first effort. The sound of Michel scoffing as Earl put his brioche dough into the cake tin can still be heard echoing around Browns.
Anyway Earl was running late, Michel apologised to the guests, and then Earl served up the food 10 minutes late. The chefs et al seemed to like it though touchy meaty French chef thought it lack a bit of seasoning but other than that it went fairly well. Earl came out, stood there for a few awkward seconds, some chefs complimented him and they clapped.
Next up was Bamos. He's a smiley bloke and seemed to actually have a personality which helps. He had to make this duck thing with some macaroni cheese inpsired tower. Not much to say here as he pretty much got everything spot on, within time and everyone raved about the dish. He came out, stood there awkwardly for a few seconds, got some great comments and a hearty round of applause. Bamos was on fire.
Next up was Woman. She was on deserts and had to make some chocolate thing with a refined rice crispie cake and some biscuit with pink bits on. She messed up with the popping candy in the crispie cake and Michel was not happy, he wanted fun and she was not gving it to him, it was the equivalent of nicking a kids stabilisers smashing them around the face and then making them watch Question Time - the BNP special. Not fun. Anyways enough of the moody Brooker impressions, she got her desert out with a little bit of help from the others and it went down very well. She stood there more awkwardly than humanly possible, got some comments and yadda yadda.
Next up it descended into the X Factor with sob stories and tales of deceased parents. This part looked a new addition to me and was absolutely woeful but provided a tea making window of opportunity.
So to the studio for the final team where they had 2 hours to make 3 of the best dishes they had ever made. After his superb duck in the last round the safe money was on Bamos but you never know what could happen with one round left. They all made 3 very good courses, I can't remember who made what but I know Bamos made an inspired starter of scotch quail eggs and some other bits, then he made a meat dish with another amazing sauce and finally a little french desert thing that Michel had banged on about previously. Michel commented his main was as near to perfect as you can get and only his ice cream let him down. He was still on fire.
The others made some nice stuff but the crown belonged to Bamos and aside from a few nervy moments in the pro kitchen and having eyes like pissholes in the snow he really was the best chef in the series (yep better than Ludo) and fully deserved to win.
Nice one Bamos
Cheers
