Strange advice you've received from your parents:
When I was about 14 or 15 years old and deciding whether to buy a guitar or a set of drums, my mum told me:
“You don’t want to be a drummer - they never get the good looking girls and have to settle for the ugly ones. You should learn the guitar, because the guitarists and singers get the good looking girls.”
Good old mother, ensuring I get the best groupie poossay.
My dad told me this around the same time, on the subject of writing songs:
“If you write a lyric about listening to a radio, don’t just say ‘my radio’, say ‘my Sony radio’. That’s advertising for the company and they’ll give you money or free things.”
I don’t think that’s right though. I’ve heard of a few instances when bands have had to change lyrics and song titles because they reference brands. Still, I like my dad’s eagerness to sell out.
