Graffiti
Graffiti is something which baffles me more than anything else about life in London, which says a lot about what I would describe as one of the oddest cities in the world.
I wisbh to spark a debate about what on earth possesses somebody to scribble (to me) meaningless symbols and non-words all over the place. I can see some merit in the more creative, pictorial graffiti you see in skate parks etc. Those creation, I suppose, are at least in some way linked to the human desire to depict life around them in an artistic fashion.
But the strange 'tags' you see dotted along the railway, on bridges and walls, phoneboxes and road signs EVREYWHERE, leave me confused. Strangely, when I see this sort of thing, it leaves me not feeling angry or annoyed as much as to pity those that took time out of their lives to roam the streets doing this sort of thing.
I hope this debate will include people who know those doing it so that I can finally get some understanding about what it all means. I have heard it suggested that it is some sort of mark of territory for those involved in gangs and the like. Is this true? Why can they not fathom anything else even remotely more ineteresting/useful to do with their time?
