How do you defeat the Trade Unions?
For most people living and working in London over the last couple of days, getting around has been a bit of a ballache thanks to the striking (and well paid) tube drivers. The very real concern is the Bob Crow and chums will try a similar stunt during the Olympics when the Mayor (be it Boris or otherwise) will have no real alternative but to relent to their demands.
So how do you go about ensuring this doesn't happen?
It seems Crow wanted TfL to sign a 'no redundancies' agreement. Not too sure how this would work in reality to be honest; if the money runs out you simply can't pay all the staff and have to let people go; it would be impossible for the Mayor to sign up to such a deal. Similarly, Crow is unlikely to sign up to a 'no strike' deal (especially with a Tory Mayor in situ) as he would lose all his future bargaining powers.
So how do you defeat the transport unions? I honestly don't know.
