One problem with the internet is that it makes some people believe that others have an interest in their lives. Discuss.
There are lots of threads along the lines of "I'm going to the pub with my friends tonight, what are you doing?"
Now, unless you are a friend of the poster, why would anyone care less? What, in the poster's mind, ever gave him the impression that other forum users would care that they are going to the pub? Someone I don't know is going to hang out with loads of other people I don't know. Great.
And then it will get a number of responses along similar lines. I don't understand this.
Similarly, someone will start a thread that says "I'm really hungover, anyone else?" Why would anyone have any interest in the fact that you're hungover? These threads then generally become a competition as to who can say they drank the most the night before. Why would anyone care?
And then there's a particular bugbear of mine: Twitter. I'm not completely against Twitter, it can have its uses. But, for example, there is a thread on here in which loads of people have listed their twitter addresses. Why would any user on this forum care what another's twitter says? Maybe if you're friends 'in real life', but if that's the case then you don't need Twitter as you can just call or send a text.
So, to summarise, the internet gives some people an undue sense of their own self-importance and leads them to believe that just because they can post a thread about their private life, they should; because you know, people care. And if you are one of those people that replies to these threads about people you have never met, why bother?
The modern age is confusing sometimes.
