Graphic Novel Addendum: Garth Ennis
So recently I've been burning through everything of this guy's I could find. It's all gold.
- The Boys: A bunch of hardcases (and Simon Pegg) harrass superheroes.
- Preacher: A man tries to find God to kick his ass.
- Dicks: A couple of dicks in Troubles-era Northern Ireland get up to shit.
- Kev: World's unluckiest SAS man occasionally has to save world.
- War Stories: Stories from World War 2.
- Hitman: Hijinks with a hitman from Gotham City.
What do I like most about this cat's stuff? Hard to decide - the words are incredible to the point where you're often left in no doubt as to where a character comes from even if there are no overt clues. The artists are always able to do justice to all of the horrible crap Ennis often comes out with (who remembers the meat man in Preacher?). He hates masked crimefighters almost as much as I do, so that's good. And of course, the material is often funny as shit - even in the midst of some very serious subjects (see War Stories).
But what I like most about Garth Ennis books - British characters. The Boys was the first of his material I'd read properly (after someone tried and failed to get me to pick up Preacher many years ago) and the first line spoken is "I'm gonna fuckin' 'ave you, you cunt.". I said to myself 'I'm in' and haven't looked back.
Read Garth Ennis books. And god help us all if they get made into films.
X-Men and all that shit can still lick my smooth, salty scrotum though.
