Matt 'The Bear' Skelton v Martin 'The Entertainer' Rogan
Wow. Just when you thought the heavyweight division had become an irredeemable running joke, two of the finest exponents of the art put the division firmly at the top of the world's sporting agenda. Two men at the peak of their physical powers (Skelton 42, Rogan 37) battled like highly-gifted lions over 11 rounds of some of the most technically perfect boxing you'll ever witness. Skelton's brutal power and lightning hand speed appeared to be too much for the quick-stepping Rogan at first, with Rogan being pinned back by some sumptuos jabbing and Ali-esque combinations. However, it was the Belfast cabbie who prevailed, with a barrage of hooks and right-hands that rocked The Bear to his knees in the 11th. And thus ended one of boxing's finest hours. Forget the 'rumble in the jungle' or the 'thriller in manilla', if Birmingham had a catchier name, this would be the battle they'd all be talking about in years to come.
Either this or the heavyweight division just died.
