Will this make iPlayer better? Or is it messing with a pretty flawless concept?
BBC iPlayer is developing an application that will mimic stumbling across shows by channel surfing.
The new software will suggest programmes to users based on their preferred genres, such as news or entertainment. The user can then jump to a different show by using a 'next' button.
"Sometimes you're bored, so grab your remote control and flick through the endless channels," Anthony Rose, head of Digital Media Technology, told Broadcast. "I was wondering, can we do that better on iPlayer?"
A prototype is also being developed for the iPlayer which will allow users to add friends and share programme recommendations. It will also give users the chance see what MSN Messenger friends have been watching and how they rate the shows.
The BBC hopes to introduce the new service later this year.
