Sci Fi films
not too many good ones are there really?
Anyway, apparently this might be changed a bit, with a couple of Dan Simmons' books being adapted - Hyperion has been picked up and they're combining the first two books into one film (dunno how that'll work, probably cursorary flashbacks for each of the stories, and mainly concentrate on the 'present day' war). Curiously, "It was the actor Leonardio DiCaprio who first showed active interested in this idea for the film andfor some time there was discussion of him doing the film with director Martin Scorsese"
DiCaprio eh? Seems like he actually has good taste, despitre coming across a tad annoying (what with Akira too)
The other film is Ilium/Olympos, which is a bit complicated but essentially is an "epic tale that spans 5,000 years and sweeps across the entire solar system, including themes and characters from Homer's The Iliad and Shakespeare's The Tempest." Also featuring greek gods and odysseus in a futuristic war with mankind. It's pretty good. One review put it as:
Or perhaps the only kind of summary worth attempting is a simple list of concepts and ideas that permeate the two books:
"Quantum energy and teleportation. Multiple universes. Time travel. Post humans. Old style humans. Nanotechnology. Brane holes. Avatars. Logosphere. Noosphere. Marcel Proust. Shakespeare. The Tempest. Caliban. Setebos. Greek Gods. Achilles. Moravecs from Jupiter. Olympus Mons. Mars. Ariel. Odysseus. Burning Man. Technological singularity. Nuclear apocalypse. Prospero. Sycorax. ARNists. Rubicon virus. Global Caliphate. Wandering Jew. Nabokov. Pantheistic solipsism…."
I hope they do a good job, although it's been 4 years already in the making, and not much news coming from it.
So yeah. Sci fi films. What are the good uns? Blade Runner and 2001 obviously, Dune's alright if you've read the book (...), Minority Report was OK but a bit throwaway, I, Robot was pretty naff. B-movies tend to be better. I can never call to mind that many films really.
