i just got a dressing down from an architect (being fucking livid-centric)
we had the usual film night at bardens tonight. as background to this story, you probably need to know that we've had 4 nights so far, and two of them have made money. two of them haven't.
it wasn't hugely well attended. more than last time, but not as much as the first couple. still, the people who were there liked what they saw, the bands were good, it was an interested crowd.
afterwards, i stepped into the office to see how they thought i/we had done, and talk shop. there was a friend of the venue owners in there, this architect guy. he spoke in no uncertain terms when questioning how dare i run a night that didn't turn a profit, telling me that my life's on the wrong track, that i can't keep doing this to the poor venue, because i'll cause it to be shut down, that i should learn that if you want to do something creative you've got to do it within the bounds of what will make a profit, that people like me will harm people like Bardens and run the venue into the ground, that i don't have a clue about life, that when i'm his age (like 30, maybe?) i'll learn the ways of life and that everything depends on money, that my night was awful, and that i need to grow up.
fuck that fucking cunt. i hope all his unimaginative buildings burn to the ground.
on another note though, if this is what being a promoter is (and i'm not really a promoter by choice, it's kind of by default, i just wanted to put on a film night, and they actually asked me to do this, i didn't approach them...), having to constantly think about venue profits and all, then i'm really not sure it's something i want to do...
any promoter types have any advice?
