So, piracy off the coast of Somalia then...
Why aren't the navies of the world descending on the horn of Africa for some target practice? It's the high seas so there aren't really any sovereignty issues (and Somalia doesn't have much of a central government anyway) and no real problem of civilian casualties, the economic consequences of piracy going unchecked in one of the word's busiest shipping lanes are potentially very grave - particularly now that the pirates have proven themselves to be capable of hijacking oil tankers - and there's even a credible link with the "war on terror" if that's what the US needs to justify getting involved. So why so little action - is it because the patrols are reluctant to engage the pirates? Or am I vastly underestimating the difficulty of tracking them down and eliminating them in such a large area of sea? Thoughts plz
