'There's not enough live venues for music' according to Feargal Sharkey....
....at a select committee meeting yesterday - and he thinks there's all this 'untapped talent' with 'nowhere to play' or 'little back rooms where bands like the Undertones can be discovered' - erm has he seen the swathes of venues in London full to the brim of never-to-be-remembered-let-alone-forgotton dead-on-their-feet bands who fill up places like the Bull & Gate, Hope & Anchor, Brixton Fridge, Catch and their regional equivalents, etc etc?
Yes yes I know this is the brave new age but 30 years ago the reason why there may have been less venues put on music or had licences in both provincial towns and the Capital was because there were less bands and most places had house bands or regular slots. Now there are more venues and more bands than 30 years ago and therefore its an oversubscribed but under populated subsect of music 'society'. Let's face it, the organic 'oh we built up a following' urban myth is just that and even if it did exist it would be impossible for it to happen now in the same way as it may have done back in the 'new golden age' (i.e. punk rock not the 60s now that many punk rockers are now in establishment positions).
See its not the hippies you shouldn't trust anymore, its old punks.
