The BBC vs. The Daily Mail
Everyone on here keeps saying how this whole "Manuelgate" incident has been blown out of all proportion, and then has seemed to blame it on the Daily Mail stirring up complaints and generally prodding it's right-wing attack dogs/readers into a vicious, angry frenzy.
But the truth is, this isn't about Manuelgate - that's just the latest weapon. The Daily Mail, and every other paper, hates the BBC with a passion because it has become such a domiating presence in the media - a very nearly omnipotent news organisation with huge resources, especially online - think about how often you use the BBC website.
Of course, we can argue that the BBC website is brilliant and informative and all the rest of it, and that the rest of the media is jealous and should just stop complaining and buck up its game - but it's not that simple. Because the BBC is funded by license payer's money, extracted from everyone who owns a TV, and is therefore public-funded, giving it the resources to trump everyone else.
That's what all this shit is about. Until the BBC decides to separate its subsidised TV production from the rest of its enterprises (like the website, which it would have to fund through either advertising or subscription), the Daily Mail and everyone else is going to hold a reasonable grudge about them. And every tiny incident like this is going to flare up into something huge and pointless.
At least, that's my two cents.
