The surprisingly still popular football thread
Has tomorrow's World Cup Andorra-England friendly been overtaken by events, or is nobody really bothered expecting the worst? No real reports on what is and isn't happening in the camp, bar Rio Ferdinand possibly missing out. Meanwhile Jamie Carragher, who might have an axe to grind, says he was never bothered about playing for England. His performances bore that out.
Keegan finally went and saved quite a few people the embarrassment. As for his replacement, mentioned in dispatches are Marcelino Garcia Toral, Miguel Angel Lotina and Juanma Lillo - I think the Mirror's made those names up, actually - but the smart money is on some sort of Wise/Poyet/Zola 'dream' team. There are reports Mike Ashley is selling to Arabian investors, but four years ago assorted Premier teams were reportedly on the verge of being taken over by everybody in Russia, including the peasants and those in the gulags.
West Ham have started shortlisting for their new manager, but Slaven Bilic says he isn't moving from Croatia. Actually, no, he says he's interested. But Roberto Donadoni wants it. But he's not been shortlisted, although Di Canio has. Oh, wait, no he hasn't. So it'll be Gianfranco Zola, John Collins, Michael Laudrup, Roberto Mancini, Serse Cosmi or Gerard Houllier. Basically, nobody has a clue.
Mark Hughes has said the club won't make huge signings in January. And then, just in case you may have thought realism had regained control, he said Man City will be "bigger than the Big Four".
I'm on holiday next week. Consider this my official abdication from this role I seem to have made a hostile takeover of to begin with.
