Sentinels
Across the UK there are Sentinels. I had a Sentinel in my school; at every break time, he would position himself against a very specific section of wall in the yard, lean back, and assume a facade of calm indifference. People talked about him, but he was rarely addressed or bullied; young 'uns would invaribaly make games around him, but they quickly got bored. I never knew his name; none of us did. He was the only kid at secondary school to wear a blazer and carry a suitcase.
There is a Sentinel in our new block of flats. He wears a powder blue outfit of sports clothes and wears a cap. He is large. He seem to emerge at around 9 in the morning, where he stands watching over the street until around 3 or 4 pm. I'm not sure if he takes breaks. My favourite thing about him is that even though he's gone in by the time I get home, the upper window of his house is open a crack, from where you can something see his little face solemnly peeping out over his domain.
Are these individuals mentally or socially handicapped in some way? Or, more likely, are there in every generation those born to keep watch; to position themselves at the breakpoints between realities, waiting for the day when those walls come down and their kind is needed again? Do they gaze into other worlds, observing unknowable kingdoms as they rise and fall?
The Sentinals. Coming summer 2009.
Please let me know of other examples, or alternatively use this thread to talk about those awesome massive robots from the X-Men. Master Mold!
