Lunch with Prole: prreferring Simon Cowell to, say, NIck Cave
Is this sick you think? At least you know with Cowell that he's there to make money out of a fickle market and music is secondary though you'd wish he'd use his 'clout' to actually break some truly fantastic singers (ignore the Brit school, they're just trying to sell an urban sound using white kids).
But then you get serious 'credible' artists who aren't actually that imaginative or even good who continually take the attention of serious music listeners (an excreble term but let's stick with it) away from encouraging anything commercial that could be good/imaginative by constantly making uninteresting water-treading blah music that is, in effect, the left field version of Cowell-pop like Leona Lewis but is all dressed up in being 'esoteric and interesting when in fact its actually rather ordinary - I just use Nick Cave as an example of course.
So, my point being - is being a cynical oaf and not pretending to be anything other than 'being in it for the money' better than treading water and not taking pop to a new height?
