The Orphanage - El Orfanato
Jesus. I'm not sure if I've ever seen a film like this, so traumatic. I first watched The Deer Hunter when I was very stoned and this new Guillermo del Toro film is right up there in how painful it is to watch.
Directed by a guy I've not seen around before, Juan Antonio Bayona; it is unrelenting. It is promoted, and I suppose is in a way, as a horror film but its just really about a mother coping with a childs death and pretending its not really happening.
My girlfriend wept and wept throughout the whole of the second half of the film, and she's a hard nut for horror. It was ultra realistic, unrelenting in its emotion for the child, unashamed in what it showed of proper looking dead people.
Has anyone seen this? Did we catch it on a bad day?
