What the fuck is Lipster? I didn't realise it was a DiS spin off.
I don't mind the site
but it seems a bit wrong just to automatically transfer people's profiles onto there.

it's very wrong
and surely illegal, even if you have to 'activate' the account. Having your details appear on a different site in the first place goes against data protection laws.
I guess DIS just gave them the full membership list from here. Yet another thing they've done to annoy me.
I'm outta here. DIS has changed so much in the past six months, it's lost all its credibility and values. I blame the site re-design. My time on these boards is up. Nice knowing y'all. Make sure someone keeps writing about Bis and Ned's Atomic Dustbin. Ta ta.

the activation element
preys on basic human laziness. 'It's already set up - I'm probably going to post at some point etc, so why not just join now?'
I'm going through the site and right now, I just don't get it. I'm sure it will improve, but it seems unfair and very wrong to offer up information like this and certainly doesn't endear me to 'activating' it in the future.
This can happen with Drupal, though
They have a 'one username' log in or something that allows for you to have anyone logged into the main Drupal development site log into your personal Drupal site.

I was just a bit confused. It makes sense, then, that if you use the same software for creating forums, then...whatever, still don't quite get it, but it's obviously a technical issue.

i think Sean said it was an error and only there because the site is still in beta. so, y'know, calm down and such.

If it's a mistake, why would it offer you the chance to activate a profile on the site?

there was an announcement made a while ago that a whole raft of sites, based on Drowned In Sound's technical setup, would be forthcoming. this is just the first, and it's still in testing.

this just means they're using the same back-end database for the Lipster as for DiS, which is not surprising for a site that's still in development, as setting up a new database takes extra time/money. In other words, they haven't made an active decision to copy your profile across - it's just that the Lipster and DiS are both different views of the same underlying information.

All I thought was that you were somehow automatically attached to both sites. The only issue I have with that is being joined up automatically to a site I don't plan to use for a while(even though as Guntrip says on another thread, the standard of debate is quite high)

I think you've all missed a key point
They could put your shoe size, date of birth, favourite colour, bank details and an extensive list of your pet hates on the Lipster and it wouldn't matter because NO-ONE READS IT.
