SOme notes on the OMM latest issue
I know this has been covered by grown ups in the NME but I was just as angered by the musical and cultural snobbry on offer - it does seem like every band went some posh school together and is either trying to be 'street poets' (the homeerotic 'ragamuffin street urchin model is happily withering) or joy free math rock book-types. This of course is the extreme in the same way as moron bands like The Twang represent the Mickey Loosefits of the world. It was the same during Britpop when the Melody Maker tried to get all NEw Romantic with the very London-based 'Romo' which lasted about 13 days somewhere back in 1995.
Everything is always predictably reactionary. Thanks to all those very standard 'bookish' bands that OMM covered no-one will now be allowed to admit to liking books for fear of being branded posh even if they're not and this will of course mean EXTREME EXTREME and dumb prole rock will swing back into vogue.
Middle ground doesn't mean middling you know. The NME journo was right though, 'rock' or indeed pop is about 'romance' in terms of dreaming and believing, but sometimes that needs pages 34-86 of Dead Souls as much as it needs the riff to Whole Lotta Rose played by a man tugging himself off over a Rover V8.
OK OK OK?
