Clive Anderson Talks Back - Peter Cook
Channel 4, 1993
Fittingly, Cook's last substantial TV performance was also one of his very best - a Christmas special on Clive Anderson's chat show, barely a year before his death. Cook played four different characters, each interviewed by Anderson, as if they were real people. And despite his broad comic brush-strokes, that was how they seemed. 'The virtuosity and variety of the invention might be taken for granted but compared with the early style which made him famous and which is associated with his name, there is something new here,' argued John Bird, 'and insight and even sympathy in the way in which Cook approaches his characters.' Indeed, all four were so rounded that they could quite easily have been interviewed more than once - or, at the very least, for twice as long. Moreover, Cook had an infinite supply of other characters, whom he could adopt at will - as he often did in private, with only his wife, Lin, to hear them. 'I wish we had done some more now,' regrets Anderson. The ones they did do are wonderful, but like the rest of Cook's work in the Eighties and early Nineties, they merely hint at what might have been.
