Heroes creator apologises for quality of show.
we havent had a thread on this, have we?
I'm trying to find a link that doesn't give away spoilers for series two...
You can google it for yourself if yr interested - the apology is about series 2.
I'm really trying not to be all "haha, in your face" about this, because I do genuinely enjoy watching the show - it's just good fun, the characters are quite interesting and it's an enjoyable 40minutes to let wash over you every week, if a little boring and lacking depth at times (but who cares really, it's a show about superheroes...)
I think I've seen all of the first series now in bits and pieces, and it was pretty good. The finale was on bbc last night, wasnt it? I don't think I'll bother with series two...
[also, I managed to not mention Lost at all. Go me]

There was a thread...
but then there's threads on everything.
but you did mention it!
FAIL.
I'll just say this:
That Lost has geuinely changed the way I look at tv and film, and thus I can't help but think everything else is really shallow and boring.
Is Lost not shallow and boring?
I got bored in Series Two and realised I didn't care any more about the characters, what happened to them or even what the mystery is. Then I stopped watching.
Does it get better?
series 3 = the best thing ever created.
In all seriousness, no form of entertainment has come close to touching it - music, film, sport, otherwise.
Series 2 was a low point but still quite good.
Whether you lost interest doesnt detract from the depth of the show- the plot and detail is incredible.
are*
It does if you felt a lack of subtance was a factor in why you stopped watching.
lost is the epitome
of brainless characterless tv
expand.
and I can make you look all wrong.
jamie doesn't like buffy either
he's deepy in the wrong trench in general.
lol
buffy is for 12 year old girls. you must have missed the news bulletin.
nah
the dvds are rated 15. so 15 years old girls.
no likeable, intelligent
or interesting characters.
terrible plot progression.
incredibly irritating 'angry violin' tension music on every cliffhanger.
lack of interest directorial style.
annoyingly worthy and very american dialogue.
Deadwood, The Shield, The Wire and many others ftw.
meh, your opinion about the characters
But I think the way in which they're explored is amazing, you get a feel for them and I feel more empathy for a lot of the characters than I've ever done with fiction. I personally think characters like Charlie, Hurley, Sawyer are all really likeable. "no interesting characters" seems insane to me. John Locke?
The plot progression is the most satisfying I've seen - the way the writers reveal everything over time is masterful. The week between each episode seems like a year - and when it does come to explaining the enigmas, it's always really well explained and satisfying.
Soundtrack's quite generic but works. The same criticism could be applied to pretty much every show in a similar style though.
I think it varies from director to director, but I think a lot of the techniques used are really interesting and unlike any others in tv.
Dialogue is personally my only problem with lost, but I think it's often exaggerated how bad that is. Certain Kate & Jack scenes are pretty cringe-worthy, but other than that I think it works well.
nah
hah, just read this on another forum...
Sums up how I feel:
"I like Heroes but it is completely stupid. I am a massive fan of Lost and consider it to be the best thing that has ever been on TV however I accept that it require you to suspend belief a bit. Heroes, on the other hand, requires you to completely suspend intelligence."
I have the exact same opinion,
but swapping 'Heroes' with 'Lost'.
Heroes
Best thing ever on tv?
:D
I'd put that series
in my top 10 US dramas over the last 15 years or so.
Not as good as the first series of 24. Nor the first & second series of ER. Nor the first series of NYPD Blue.
Nor most of Homicide: Life on the street.
Nor the Sopranos.
And probably not as good as the wire, either.
But I haven't seen enough of that.
And NOTHING
is as good as the episode of Six Feet Under when David gets kidnapped.
Are you considering the following in your list:
The Shield
The X-Files
Firefly
Space Above and Beyond
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Angel
Six Feet Under
I'm not actually claiming all of these are necessarily better than Heroes. Just questioning how you rate all the shows.
Yes.
Don't like what I've seen of the Shield; the X files had some amazing episodes, but in retrospect was quite patchy; not a big buffy/angel fan although I appreciate they're well done for what they are. I mentioned 6 feet under, and I've not heard of the others.
You're welcome.
that's...
...postmodernist telly for you. nothing is of value anymore and nothing is new.
pessimistic but true.
He's wrong
The quality has actually slipped since he made that apology. It was all unfurling really nicely and slowly. Recent episodes have seemed rushed.
Somebody needs to cancel their subscription to Behind The Times
heroes
is so poe faced and relentlessly miserable. Its like one long clumpy metaphor for the current paranoid climate of the 'other' pervading America. Snore.
it'd be great if it was actually Poe-faced
and every hero was a consumptive, mentally ill New Englander with some disturbing family issues.
Super power:
I can hide cats in walls
:D
the power to
end every episode really badly, totally ruining the great buildup?
I really believe
all these programmes get dragged out far too much. 1 Series, great, 2, ok, 3, starting to get boring now. Ie Lost.
Same applies for movies, do we really need 4 Saw films? The first was great but they just drag these things out to cash in on sorry punters hard earned cash.
I don't like Heroes or Lost
Both strike me as meandering, characterless nonsense
sigh.
Lost certainly struck me this way.
Maybe there have been improvements since I stopped watching but I'd lost interest in the characters and it felt like more and more questions were raised with no prospect of answers.
I lost patience.
Lost is particularly bad
Perhaps it did pick up in series 3 but I'd already wasted enough of my time on it by then.
Sigh at people who like Lost!
It really did pick up in season 3
and before that even, at the the end of 2.
I'm glad I kept watching it, and the end is going to be great.
Wasn't this...
A comment on the opening episodes of Series 2???
Series Two does start slowly, but has now hit the mark (just as the flippin' writers strike kicks in!).
i made a thread on it
no one read it though. I think them starting afresh for the 3rd chapter is a good move, i didnt think series 2 was that bad but it wasnt as good as the first series.
The writers of heroes said they wanted to avoid the problems Lost had had by stringing people along for too long but i just think it makes the show seem a bit thin and lack any sort of drama. I dont think Heroes will ever have anything as good as the 3rd series of Lost was.
what's the point in him apologising?
have some conviction in your own work for christ's sake or you may as well just cancel the whole thing.
you'd never get this sort of thing from the lost creators.
Lost podcasts <3
They're just the BEST.
i haven't watched those mini-episodes you posted about yet :(
i NEED to. stupid essays that have to be written >:(
the latest one has Juliet telling Jack
about how Ben sent her as a spy. It's not available online yet...
They're so good :D
thats because they thrive
on giving people crap and the audience liking them for it
