People leaving work
A chap that I work with has a new role within the company, which means he will be leaving this office and working about another 200 miles further north. As he is leaving, there is a collection going around so that we can get him something. Always a nice thought, I think. However, the collection envelope has come round hidden inside a file (the usual clever surreptitious disguise) and on the front of the envelope, underlined and in big red pen, it says '£5 PLEASE'.
Now, I like this bloke; he's mildly useless at his job and he's quite ignorant but for all that, he can be quite a good bloke. I've worked with him for about the last 6 years, I suppose. I'm quite happy to contribute to his leaving present, and £5 isn't unreasonable. However, I do resent being expected to contribute that amount, shouldn't that be up to me?
Is there any earthly way of communicating my dislike of this approach, whilst at the same time demonstrating that I have no problem with the person that the collection is for or indeed contributing to his present?
It arrived on my desk about 9.30; I'm yet to do anything with it. That is my silent stance on the matter so far...
