anyone watched/discovered any good late 60s/70s cinema recently? today i watched:
The Pawnbroker (1964) - pretty stylised for so early a date, one of Sidney Lumet's first directorial roles. Rod Steiger puts on perhaps the best performance of his career as the bitter pawnbroker of the title who we discover as a concentration camp survivor in a black area of New York. the first film to recreate the concentration camps, wonderful bleak b&w cinematography, lovely atmosphere, fantastic use of modernist architecture and other cityscapes. one of my best discoveries for ages.
The Swimmer (1968) - directed by Bert Perry & Sydney Pollack, starring Burt Lancaster. very odd symbolist john cheever adaptation, almost dreamlike. lovely production design.
