oR's Advice to Indie Labels
I'm specifically thinking about DiS, of course, but also to Mr Brainlove's label and my other friends who frequent these boards:
I would send my musicians recordings to KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic with Nick Hardcourt. He's not bound by programmer's playlists et al; he likes it, he'll play it. He's the American version of John Peel, although he's actually a Brit.
I mention this cos not being in the states you might not know about MBE. And if I were running a small indie label I'd surely want my artists to receive some airplay.
Also, Indie 103.1 fm, in L.A. has a show called Passport Approved that frequently play unsigned acts from abroad. I could easily provide you with links for more info on both outlets but then I'd feel I'd earned a marketing fee, and collecting from you blokes might be near impossible.
What Else? (Other than being a little disappointed DiS didn't sign the Arctic Monkeys) How should a label market their musicians? What can a band do for a little self-promotion? Besides My Space, how can bands utilize the internet? Put yer thinking caps on and let's consider the business side of the indie music scene. Your two cents here might help one of your DiS buddies make it to the big time!
