Favourite Band Timelines
I'm musically fickle, I know I am, I've come to terms with it. I was trying to work out what my favourite bands have been over the years and came up with the below.
Smashing Pumpkins -> Oasis -> Wu Tang Clan -> Cypress Hill -> Incubus -> Tool -> Pink Floyd -> The Cure -> The National -> Burial (but I still love The National)
Chronologically post your favourite bands below:
green day -> muse -> of montreal -> john zorn's naked city -> lady gaga -> arthur russell -> xiu xiu / taylor swift
basically i have slowly gone from favouring technical prowess to bands that can support my perpetual nervous breakdown
The Police > Adam & The Ants >
The Specials > Madness > Black Sabbath > Siouxsie & The Banshees > The Exploited > Dead Kennedys > CRASS > New Order > The Cure > The Smiths > Ramones > The Cramps > The Damned > Husker Du > Slayer > Hard Ons > Public Enemy > Beastie Boys > Electro Hippies > Nirvana > Spacemen 3 > Urban Dance Squad > Fucking Champs > Bo Ningen.
The massive gap fits working in a record shop and getting disillusioned with all the marketing but I'm sure there's some that aren't coming to mind at present that should fill that bit...
xtc/the cure -> mogwai -> blur -> mansun -> cardiacs
Thought I was such a little rebel for liking both Mogwai and Blur
Eurythmics -> U2 -> Sisters of Mercy -> Pixies -> mbv -> Drugstore -> Who knows? Who cares? How can you have one favourite? -> Skullflower
Kylie --> Belinda Carlisle --> Radiohead --> Mansun --> NIN/Tool --> yourcodenameis:milo --> Trail of Dead --> The Mars Volta --> Kayo Dot --> Prurient
oh Smashing Pumpkins
lump em in with NIN and Tool I guess
James > Jamiroquai > Robbie Williams > Avril Lavigne > Good Charlotte > Lostprophets (eugh) > Green Day > Franz Ferdinand > Blink 182 > Fall Out Boy > My Chemical Romance > Slipknot > Biffy Clyro > Radiohead > Brand New* > Arcade Fire > The National > Los Campesinos* > At The Drive In > Deftones* > Smashing Pumpkins* > Taylor Swift*
*Indicates them still being within my top 10 or whatever.
Nice idea
Mud>T-Rex>Adam & the Ants>Depeche Mode>New Order>The Smiths>Happy Mondays>Suede>Tindersticks>Nick Cave>Sigur Ros>Mogwai
So basically, dumb happy glam stuff as a kid, gloomy stuff as an adolescent/student, brief bit of cheerfulness around the Madchester/Britpop era, then back to default gloom mode.
Radiohead > Nirvana > Oasis > Blur > R.E.M. > The Cure > Manic Street Preachers > Led Zeppelin > David Bowie > The Beatles > The Smiths > Sex Pistols (not the music, just Johnny Rotten in general) > Arcade Fire > Joy Division > U2 > Kate Bush > Talk Talk >>>>>>>>>> New Order > Teenage Fanclub
please ignore the first two bands :(
boyzone > RHCP > blur > gorillaz > radiohead > broken social scene > singer-songwriter types (damien rice, ryan adams, holly throsby, feist, etc.) > twee types (camera obscura mostly) > wolf parade > yo la tengo (saw them live in 2007, still counts as one of the best moments of my life) > joy division > tom waits > the national > mount eerie/ the microphones > the xx
ultimately though, I still hold tom waits, the national and yo la tengo very dearly. seeing it laid out like this make me realize that my favorites are mostly pretty generic.
ooh, tough, probably
Nirvana > Smashing Pumpkins > Green Day > Queens of the Stone Age > Refused > Biffy Clyro > Interpol > Fucked Up > Unwound
Michael Jackson>Blur>Radiohead>Metallica>Rocket From The Crypt>Faith No More (& Mike Patton related bands)>ISIS>Tim Hecker>Earth/Dylan Carlson>Godflesh/Jesu>Melvins...
still love em all and listen to most pretty regularly
bob dylan > the white stripes > the hold steady > blur > pavement > guided by voices > wilco > the dismemberment plan > titus andronicus > cap'n jazz > guided by voices
.
Jan hammer> the stone roses> verve> spiritualized> Orbital> the Rolling Stones > the who > funkadelic> (early) grateful dead> The MC5
capricious
neil diamond > kylie > mj > gn'r >/>/> nirvana > beatles > lemonheads > blur > bowie > bjork > massive attack > wilco > leonard cohen > augie march > strokes > tom waits > four tet > ali farka toure > nick cave > toumani diabete > st. vincent > nils frahm > mbongwana star.
Bon Jovi > Genesis > The Smiths > Joy Division > The Stone Roses > Pixies > Ramones > Wilco > The Mountain Goats.
Probably missing a few there, Roses/Pixies/Ramones pretty much simultaneous for a good few years.
I've missed a lot...
I get bored easily, but go through phases.
Eric Clapton > Fat Boy Slim > Chemical Brothers > Eminem > Leftfield > Deep Purple > Frank Zappa > Radiohead > Jesus and Mary Chain > The Stooges > My Bloody Valentine > PJ Harvey > King Creosote > Arab Strap > Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry > Stevie Wonder > Kraftwerk > Fad Gadget > Funkadelic > Burial > Caribou> Nils Frahm > FKA Twigs
R.E.M. > The Cure > David Bowie > The Jesus and Mary Chain > The Cribs
Inner Circle > The Levellers > Pulp
Don't think I've ever had a single favourite band
but I've definitely got a club of favourites that I started on very strong and have never stopped loving.
David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon/& Garfunkel, Beach Boys - since I was born
Kanye West - since 2004
Modest Mouse - since 2005
Massive Attack, LCD Soundsystem - since 2007
R.E.M., The Smiths/Mozza, Los Campesinos! - since 2008
The Twilight Sad, The Rolling Stones - since 2009
Pulp, Taylor Swift - since 2010when I first started buying and listening to my own music in the late nineties, I properly loved stuff like Ash, At The Drive-In, Blink 182, Green Day, shit like that, but always saw it as less good than my dad's stuff, because I was indoctrinated. The College Dropout really made me sit up and think there was genuinely brilliant music being made, waded through some truly dire hip-hop round about that time, trying to find something else like it, funnily enough I've recently fallen out of love with The College Dropout, but still love all other Kanye. I did have a very strong Bloc Party phase, starting with Silent Alarm, didn't really let go until 2012 when I had to accept it was over, but around those first two albums, I fucked loved them.
Christ, my taste in music is boring.
Oh.
I actually think Muse is missing, sandwiched between Biffy and Radiohead.
2007 - 2009 ("indie" phase): Franz Ferdinand
2009-2010: ("metal-that-is-not-too-harsh-for-indie-boys" phase): Mastodon
2010 - ?: ("post punk and post hardcore and alternative-american-music from-the-late-80's/early 90's phase"): Fugazi.Hmm, I forgot Guns 'n' Roses
They featured briefly post-Meat Loaf. "Don't you crieee-ay-ay-ay-ayayayy tonight" and all that. Wonderful stuff.
TheKennedyCurse this'd this-
wonton this'd this
The Spice Girls -> Steps -> Vengaboys -> Sum 41 -> Eminem
-> The Electric Six -> Radiohead -> The Electric Six -> The Electric Six/And So I Watch You From Afar/Adebisi Shank (triumvirate) -> Taylor Swift
This was fun to compile, but it doesn't make interesting reading
Coldplay -> Moby -> Arcade Fire -> Radiohead -> Okkervil River -> The Flaming Lips -> Wild Beasts -> The Antlers
Something like...
The Beatles > Megadeth > Pixies > Pavement > Slint > Kyuss > Harvey Milk > Sufjan Stevens > Mountain Man
Michael Jackson -> 911 -> Linkin Park -> Muse -> Elliott Smith ->
My Bloody Valentine/The Cure -> Hope of the States -> Sigur Rós
Abba > Prince > Rage Against The Machine > Green Day > Nirvana > Butthole Surfers
Michael Jackson > Oasis > Ocean Colour Scene > Pink Floyd > Green Day & Nirvana > Muse > Radiohead > Flaming Lips > Beastie Boys > Bright Eyes > LCD Soundsystem > Brand New & Twilight Sad > Los Campesinos > Mogwai > Burial
Butthole Surfers THEN Michael Jackson? That's some turnaround!
ahh
totally read that wrong, apologies.
should probably chuck
michael jackson and SPACE onto the front before gomez
It's hazy but I think from about
12 or 13 yrs old: Sum 41 > Led Zeppelin (14) > Bright Eyes (15) > The Velvet Underground > The Beatles (16) > The Smiths (18) > Wipers (21-odd?) > Probably Lou Reed again these days
Ummm. Something like.
ELO > Genesis > Yes > VdGG > Joy Division/New Order/4AD > Mahler/Sibelius/Shostakovich > Neil Young > Sigur Ros > BoC/Electronica/Ambient
...
12-13 rage against the machine
14/15 death cab for cutie
15/16 built to spill
16-25 pavementthee oh sees and sleater kinney have been pavement supplements for the last couple of years but pavement are number 1 forever and always in my book.
feels like this thread will be used in social science gcses as evidence that multiculturalism failed lol
OH and The Fiery Furnaces probably sneak in just before Mansun
Cardiacs have been #1 since I was a teenager so this isn't really representative of my taste tbf
Blink 182 > Thursday > Alexisonfire > The Blood Brothers
thats it
