I think I like it, I wasn't sure I would.
Geogaddi was amazingly sinister and menacing, this is a lot lighter and "chilled" (in a good way for once, not like those bollocks compilations of zero 7 and whale noises). It's quite shoegazy, in a slowdive kind of way, but it's not overblown like corny visions of soaring landscapes and mountains, more like sitting on your own in the local park on a frosty morning by a murky man-made pond... or something...
I was a bit sceptical when I read about it having guitars in it, but it does sound good. They're used more like samples and stretched and morphed, rather than standard acoustic guitar plucky sounds over the top, which I was fearing a bit.
The only thing I don't like is that the beats are much poorer, and they use a lot of real sounding drums and standard drum machine sounds, which just doesn't really work, and they're not all that interesting.
I'm kind of glad it hasn't progressed TOO much though, they have such a unique sound still, even with all the imitators, they fucking INVENTED that sound, they're allowed to keep doing it. It still has all those wheezy, nostalgic samples and wobbly, inverted sounding analogue synths.
So yeah, I approve of it. 8/10 maybe... best tracks: 'Oscar See Through Red Eye' and 'Chromakey Dreamcoat' (the 2nd track is always good isn't it?)
anyone else heard it yet?
