Where to start with Death Cab For Cutie?
Having previously written them off as whimsical indie-schmindie for awkward bespectacled American undergraduates, I'm now listening to Codes and Keys on the Youtube and thoroughly enjoying it...so what should I check out next? Transantlanticism?

Yep
Ok, then which one next?
This is one the bands where I can truly say
I prefer their earlier work. We Have The Facts... is easily their best work.
Trans still stands up as one of the best modern indie albums imho
the lyrical details are easily on par with someone like The National and the production really is superb. After that I'd say We Have The Facts, it's a bit slower and simpler (mostly just guitar/bass/drums, not much studio magic going on) but as a result it's also more direct in a way.
I'd list the albums like this:
Trans > Facts > Plans > Photo Album > Narrow Stairs > Codes and Keys > Something About Airplanes
i wouldnt waste my time
awful band
Plans is winning so far
Trans didn't grab my attention in quite the same way but not writing it off yet
Plans is shit.
Transatlanticism > The Photo Album > Narrow Stairs
Codes and Keys is ok.
I've got the feeling that I'm appreciating their albums
In an inverse order to the rest of you...oops
HOW VERY DARE YOU
trans and plans are both good
but we have the facts is a classic. 405 <3
405.
The version on the John Byrd EP is so, so gorgeous.
The studio version is absolutely ace too though.
I guess it's maybe only noticeable on headphones
but I love love love how at the start of that it's like... uhm... a repeating guitar line thing and at evenly spaced intervals every other member of the band kicks in, one a a time / after the other. magical.
Hide yr bad habits underneath the patio, patio, patio, patiooooooo
That song haunts me.
Transatlanticism > Plans > We Have the Facts > The Photo Album > Narrow Stairs > Codes and Keys > Something About Airplanes
almost snap!
The Photo Album > Transatlanticism > We Have The Facts > Something About Airplanes > Plans > Narrow Stairs > Codes and Keys
is the correct answer.
Definitely go Transatlanticism.
The only one of their albums I would consider to be "great".
Hmmm
For my money:
Transatlanticism = We Have The Facts > Plans > Narrow Stairs > The Photo Album > Something About Airplanes > Codes & Keys
Transatlanticism is a GREAT starting point, as are We Have The Facts and Plans. Those three records are incredible, but also very accessible (not that they ever had an issue with accessibility). Great starting points, really. They don't necessarily have a BAD starting point, but those first two on my list are the best of the best for that band.
Transatlanticism is their best...
A masterpiece. You cannot do better when it comes to Death Cab for Cutie.
Not a single sour note on that record.
i'd put them (up until 2004) as one of my favourite bands
and my route of discovery with them was:
transatlanticism
we have the facts
the photo album
you can play these songs with chords
Which is also probably my order of their albums. I like to think they split up after Transatlanticism.
