Sigur Ros confirm 7th album Kveikur out June 17th 2013
Press Release:
Sigur Rós have announced details of their new studio album. Titled Kveikur, the album is Sigur Rós’s first since signing to XL Recordings worldwide and will be released on 17th / 18th June 2013.
To mark the news, the band today reveal new song “Brennisteinn”, the first track to be taken from Kveikur which was self-produced by the three members of Sigur Rós: Jón Þór Birgisson, Georg Holm and Orri Páll Dýrason. It’s accompanied by an Andrew Huang-directed video that can be viewed right now at http://www.sigur-ros.co.uk/. As fans who’ve heard new songs performed on the band’s current tour will testify, “Brennisteinn” marks a shift towards a more direct, aggressive sound on the new record.
To further celebrate the announcement, and to preview the band’s forthcoming 25th March show at New York’s legendary Madison Square Garden, Sigur Rós are also set to appear on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon tonight. The live performance will see them playing another new song from Kveikur.
Meanwhile, Sigur Rós will play a series of European dates in November, including their biggest ever UK headline show at London’s Wembley Arena on Thursday 21st November. Tickets for the dates go on general sale on 28th March (except Oslo, on sale 4th April).

Sigur Rós
It's a Sigur Rós album.
I'm going to love it.
Got a few things to say about this
Firstly, I'm sure I'm not in the minority when I say I'm really excited about the new sound. That song sounds fantastic and I think most fans have been waiting for this since Untitled 8.
But also I'm a big fan of Valtari and don't necessarily believe this shows the band is "back on track". If anything I'd see them as companion pieces, showcasing the contrasting sides of the band's sound.
Totally
I really loved Valtari, but I'm still impressed that they're back with new material so quickly, especially when it's so different to Valtari as well. It's probably so quick mind given that Valtari isn't an album that can work live or provide any singles for them...
I still wonder if it would've worked better as a Jonsi solo release
Which is what it sounds like bar track 3 I'd say. It is good as I mentioned but it's so quiet and understated it got a bit trampled by the hype of Sigurd Ros being back.
Yeah, it was quite an odd way to comeback, with something so subdued. I just figured it was a reaction to the Meo Sud... pop era of the band. It does seem like, what with the new reord label and the changed line-up, that they're pushing this one as the 'real' comeback.
I feel a need to revist it
Off the top of my head I can't think of a single song from there. Which is odd, becuase I listened to it a fair bit and know I liked it. The record is just so slight I guess.
New stuff sounded great live and I love the video. I am happy.
I think that's the main problem for me
There was muted praise for Valtari and I can imagine people thinking "now we're talking" in regards to this announcement. But, for me, as much as I look forward to some proper catharsis, I'll be astounded if there's anything as beautiful as Ekki Mukk on there.
I love Valtari
and have probably played it more than any other SR album since (). But this new stuff is sounding spectacular.
You're completely right about people waiting since Untitled 8
Loved Von, AB and () but not liked their stuff since. That song sounds good so will give the new album a spin.
Brennstein is the best thing they've done in YEARS
the 3 track ep is sounding grand;
http://www.sigur-ros.co.uk/brennisteinn/
Didn't know this was out
Cheers. Just bought it!
Oh my
This really is rather excellent isn't it?
.
Brilliant.
The new stuff sounded *brilliant* on the recent tour.
Properly dead excited for this. I enjoyed Valtari but thought it was a pretty weak effort overall.
Problem with Valtari was...
...it was just that little bit TOO subtle. Some nice ideas but without any real contrast there weren't really any bits that stood out.
The new EP is pretty amazing though and immediately the first thing that comes to mind is the contrast they have brought back into the equation.
Very excited about this.
I did like Valtari but I am glad they look to be returning to a beefier sound.
I can't wait to hear the new stuff
I can't wait to hear the new stuff
but I can't listen at work, nor access stuff like youtube.
I'm less impressed with the tour venues though. Wembley Arena? Brighton Centre? I think I'll stay at home and watch Inni instead :/
Inni
which was filmed at a venue notorious for terrible, terrible, sound?
Sound on Inni is good though
I did notice the poor sound whilst I was there, but I was quite far back.
it is
i'm moderately unsure what my point was...
!
That EP and the video for the track
is fucking insane. I am HNNNNGGGGGing for Eotr now.
Half-heard Brennistein this morning
sounded like their older stuff, like Agaetis Byrjun / () but less polished...potentially a very good thing, but like I said, only half-heard. I lost immediate interest in the band after Takk (although I really like that album) so a return to their earlier sound is no bad thing IMHO
The title track of the album sounds awesome too
http://pitchfork.com/news/50064-watch-sigur-ros-debut-new-song-on-fallon/
This is a very very exciting-sounding record.
I really hope the drums on the record sound like that
Both songs released are fucking excellent.
New Track - Isjaki

Only first listen, but not loving this as much as I did on first listen of the previous 2. Not as dark but it's bonnie enough.
Really excited about the album.
I much prefer this one
holy shit how have i just seen this thread/that first track
omg
New track
Kveikur

Good grief, this is so good.
Good God, that's intense.
Even if all the songs I havent heard are crap
It would still be a good album
If they are all as good though
Then it might just challenge Ágætis Byrjun for the spot of my favourite Sigur Rós album. Though of course that would take a long time to tell as Ágætis Byrjun is one of my personal 10/10 albums, which is an accolade I only dole out after some time.
i find myself listening to the live version of brennstein more than the recorded one;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPEhKNlPLBo
from 3:45 to 5:45 is all i want in music really, the way it drops at 4:47 especially-goosebumps everytime. the recorded version sounds a bit too...overproduced? still wonderful mind.
I was at that gig
It sounded so enormous that Untitled 8 shortly after it was actually almost an anti climax.
this all sounds (from what I've read) to be a 'return to form'
i.e. revisiting the past as if they've still got it.
they lost it on Med Sud..., and I don't know if I trust them to be great again.
it's not like bands can't appear to have lost the magic only to come back, like with 'Drums and Guns', 'Embryonic', and such, but in this case, it's hard to imagine them being vital again.
I'll give the new tunes a listen, but I have no great hopes.
yeah definitely give them a listen
i dont think sigur ros ever lost it, they've just gone for different sounds, whether the happy-clappy poppy stuff or the overly-'dark' ambient stuff. they've still written brilliant songs throughout.
the one problem i can see with this album so far is how overproduced it is. the live versions of several of the songs however stand up to anything they've written in my eyes.
Definitely agree it's a bit shiny
Even the version they put out as a 60 sec teaser for the album sounded a bit rawer than the finished version.
Still all pretty bloody exciting anyway.
Production doesn't count THAT much
You're being a bit anal if it does.
of course it does you silly billy
I have this on right now.
I really like it.
#review
I AM SO EXCITED ABOUT GETTING TO HEAR THIS
Really don't like 'Brennisteinn'.
That sort of thing isn't really what i want from Sigur Ros. Their ambient stuff is obviously brilliant, hugely critically claimed and rightly popular. The earlier more post-rocky stuff, it's just not for me. If they start getting more back to that, or chucking chainsaws over the intro of songs, they're only going to alienate fans, really.
I know!
how dare they alienate fans such as you, taffor.
You recognised the obvious brilliance of their 'ambient stuff', stuff that garnered huge critical acclaim and popularity, and now instead of doing the exact same thing over and over again, they've gone and changed their sound a bit! Crazy fucking Nordics.
If your reading this Sigur Ros, you had the acclaim and popularity, but now the only thing you are going to do, the ONLY thing, is alienate your fans. This isn't what taffor really wants from you. Sort it out.
does Sigur Ros read this boards?
definitely
*do
First listen!
I really don't know how people make judgements on albums they've anticipated after one listen...but anyway m, so much stuff caught my attention. Blapradur and the title track stood out in particular. I'll just be rinsing this whenever I get the chance.
I've read how this is supposedly a return to early-Sigur Ros...but surely Valtari was the same? This is just the louder side.
yeah, Valtari is the closest thing they've done to Von
It's leaked
and if I din't have a mothafucka of a virus banging me into pieces I'd be playing it.
:(
the magic's back :)
Came back last year
Keep up ;)
The magic never left!
I have ordered the vinyl
So I'm going to wait for that. Good to see that people's first impressions are positive ones.
It's fucking brilliant
I've listened to it about five times today. So, so good. Not a weak track on it.
beautiful.
This is properly excellent
Tough to pick standouts on first couple of listens as it's all fantastic. Can't judge fully until a few more listens but I reckon it's up there with their best.
Jaw-droppingly good
Hard to think of a band who've caused so much damage to my jaw in the last decade. Up there with (), Agaetis & Valtari already.
Spent a few days with this now.
It's really quite stunning. I've yet to dislike any of their albums since Von, so this isn't much of a surprise.
As every man and his dog have said, the teeth are back. It's true but it's so well balanced for all the roar of Brennistein there are tunes that remind me of Með suð (Rafstraumur) and Valtari (Var). In an album of standouts I think the one that hits the highest highs is Yfirborð which is probably going to end up being my track of the year and the best thing the band have done in years. I can also imagine it being absolutely insane live (praying for an extended version with full on dance party vibes)
Von - 6.1
Ágætis byrjun - 9.1
( ) - 10.0
Takk... - 9.4
Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust - 8.0
Valtari - 8.3
Kveikur - 8.5
Yfirborð live
Quite a muted affair on the last tour, opening song played behind the big curtain. Absolutely stunning though.
Respect to you guys for doing the proper Icelandic letters
really didn't expect to like this as much as I do
but here we are
Pitchfork write an 8.7 and then give it a 8.1

it feels like a Sigur Ros
computer game
keeps fucking freezing
Well
this has given me a pretty good idea of what it would sound like if Sigur Ros were playing in a garden shed three streets away from me. Top stuff.
