The Knife are really getting on my nerves now
I mean the coupla preview tracks they've released from their new album are pretty good I reckon but there's all this crap surrounding it with self-consciously bizarre press releases and videos and concepts etc. it's just really tedious and somewhat patronising but I'm doing my best to ignore it all and hoepfully I won't end up hating htem before I see em in May

thanks for letting us know dude.
after reading that press release i think i'll ignore
everything but the LP itself
To be fair the video for their new single isn't bizarre, pretentious or weird.
It's a boringly standard music video. They just released an explanation that claimed it was something else. I've not seen their latest press release. Unless we are referring to the one where they talked bollocks about what the video symbolised...
Yeah the videos themselves are good
but as you say it's their explanation that particularly irks me. Especially as they seem so patronising about it and seem to want to spell everything out so everyone only sees their interpretation. They're not giving much credit to their audience and it's all about them. and that press release, ugh.
I'm a bit worried about the new album actually, considering its length, track titles and track lengths. Doesn't bode well. Of course critics will love it but I don't want all this unnecessary pseudo-conceptual crap.
Not sure I've ever knowingly read a band's press release
You must read them loads, surely?
It's what pretty much all news reports about new albums are based on and directly quote.
a lot of reviews too
they just re-writen prob by accident a lot of the time by enthusiastic bloggers and music writers but its still the same old stuff in the 'reviews' as the press release.
I don't really read news reports about new albums either
Totally agree
"Tomorrow, In A Year" was the most pretentious production I've ever attended, but I'd hoped that was a blip. Unfortunately, their two most recent press releases suggest otherwise.
the album is totally insane
but cf that pretentiousness thread the other other day, there's nothing that makes you look more like a boring bastard than describing music as 'pretentious' just because it's a little out there - there's plenty of ways you can legitimately criticise this music without sounding like the Knife's embittered granddad suggesting they've got ideas above their station.
I think the one thing people forget about tje Knife is that they have a sense of humour and a lot of what they do is quite tongue in cheek - Full of Fire ends with a snatch of a Salt N Pepa song, ffs.
I'm not convinced you've read the thread.
I don't think anyone's described their music as pretentious, whether it's because it's a little out there or not. People are criticising them for releasing shit press releases. Bugger all to do with the music.
well, the word 'pretentious' has been bandied
in the thread, but if to rephrase for the OP (which doesn't include the word) 'all this crap surrounding it with self-consciously bizarre press releases and videos and concepts etc' - I think it's all quite tongue in cheek, why would you stress about it?
"I'm not convinced you've read the thread"
is definitely a phrase i'd like to use in future, a very elegant put down indeed.
I'm not convinced you've not read the thread
Would be an inelegant comeback tho?
Double negative....
..... Lacks intelligence.
The Knife can do no harm
Maybe they need sharpening
just saying. Never heard 'em, so I can only make stupid jokes from the sidelines.
Silent Shout is a stone-cold classic.
I am sure that everything is going to turn out well. The two full songs that have been released are brilliant, and the 6-minute clip of "Old Dreams Waiting To Be Realized" I've heard is fucking mental, too. The Knife have always - ALWAYS - been a couple of weirdos. Why is this recent development anything new?
To the OP: if you reckon the new songs are pretty good, why do you care THAT much about the extracurricular stuff? They're clearly fucking around a bit, why pay that much mind to it all?
The long and short of it is, they said at the beginning that they never planned to make another record. I'm not going to complain about anything that comes out of the fact that they DID.
As a side note
There's a super great line in "Old Dreams Waiting to Be Realized" that goes "Why does it feel so good to clean the world?" which seems like a definite and awesome throwback to the line in "One Hit" when Olof sings "For a reasonable salary, I would wash the world." It's so great. There's a definite theme of gender defiance in that song, which seems to be a very major theme with this new record, so that link is really excellent.
I fucking love The Knife.
does the lad sing?
i thought all the "male" vocals were the lass through pitch shifter?
I think he does on the odd song
One Hit's definitely just her pitch shifted though
It's him on Marble House, isn't it?
(Well, both of them - it's a duet I mean).
nah that was a singer called
Jay Jay Johnson
Oh, right
Well I don't know what songs Olof sings on then.
He is hot
I'm not sure, I always assumed they both sang.
Olof pops up a lot less, but I'm fairly sure that's him in, say, "We Share Our Mother's Health" and "Still Light" and such.
pretty sure that WSOMH is all her
As someone who considers themself a fan of The Knife
I have very much not liked the new material thus far. Baffled why people are letting them get away with it.
You're baffled why people are letting The Knife get away with you not liking the new stuff?
letting them get away with it
: DDDD
sean being out of step with what's going on
quelle surprise
belated safety wink
They've always been pretentious
Sort of part of the deal. Also think it's great their new material is divisive. If they were doing the same thing 7 years later that would be fairly lamentable no? There's a shedload of witch house/ tri angle etc groups who have mined the Silent Shout sound to widely varying degrees of success. The Knife obviously moved on.
They are just amazing
Everything they do. Amazing. Love them. Looking forward to 9th May.
Yeah
I suppose it's not that big a deal. I trust them enough to know what they're doing with this. I just really liked the mystery they used to possess, now that seems to be gone.
......if you do end up hating them before May
I'll gladly put your ticket to good use.
I love the Knife
but the 'campaign' seems to have dragged on and on already to the point where I'm not even that excited hearing the album anymore. Should be a good live show though this summer.
