Best New Order song?
Probably tougher than any other band to pick a winner. Regret, Ceremony, Temptation ... and Blue Monday, of course.
So, are you able to step up and put your full weight behind one and only one?
NB: anyone who picks an album track will, of course, be laughed at.

Blue Monday
No doubt.
Bizarre Love Triangle
Rock The Shack
Laugh away upside man...
you've done me
Ceremony
Fer sure
Sub-thread: New Order head 2 head
Blue Monday 88 v. Blue Monday original
Bizarre Love Triangle 94 v. Bizarre Love Triangle original
Temptation 7" v. Temptation original
I'm gonna trump your Blue Monday 88 and Blue Monday original
with Blue Monday Hardfloor remix. Killer remix that one.
bm88 was weird
the band said they just stuck as much extra stuff on it as they could & thought the remixers would take a load off & just leave the best bits, but they didn't remove any of it
temptation 7" v original?
the 12 & the 7 came out at the same time din't they?
they are both original versions, albeit very different
would love to hear the intro from the 7" merged with the 12" version
My understanding is that the 12" was the original recording
and it was edited and remixed for the 7" — which is kinda the opposite of what you'd normally expect (at the time, where the 12" was an extended mix of the original recording released on the 7").
Wiki says this:
"The two tracks [i.e. Temptation and Hurt] were recorded as 12" long versions and later edited to 7" by engineer Peter Woolliscroft using one of the first Sony PCM 1610 Digital editing systems available in UK. The 7" version is a more structured version with a commercial synthpop feel; the 12" is more chaotic with the emphasis on electronic rhythms rather than melody. The 7" version plays at 33.3rpm to accommodate its length of around five and a half minutes. Both versions bear the same catalogue number "FAC 63" despite these differences."
all their singles were recorded full length & then edited down
but they were released at the same time, hence both original in that sense
when there are as many versions as there are of some of these songs through reworkings to label the original releases as non original would be confusing
other than the original 7" & 12" releases there's the secret machines remix, substance version, last night a song saved my life version, wild mix, total mix & temptation 98 versions for example
I think I was confusing the '87 version for the original 12"
possibly because that wiki bit makes it sound like the 7" sounds very different to the 12" (and that is true of the 7" vis-a-vis the '87 version).
the 7" has a completely different start
& is obviously a lot shorter than the 12", but is otherwise pretty similar
check out the commonewelath games version though - think it's available on retro
The Perfect Kiss
love that they wanted to stick thats all folks
from the cartoons at the end of the song but would have been charged too much, so went with frog noises instead
track benefits from that decision, thanks warner bros
Big fan
but Dream Attack is my fave
Your Silent Face
Your Silent Face
Your Silent Face
Your Silent Face
Your Silent Face
Your Silent Face
^^^^This
My all-time favourite song ever...
Procession
yeah, it's 'Procession'
I was agreeing
it looks like I'm correcting you or something.
"Age of Consent" anyone?
My second choice after Ceremony
Yeah, Age of Consent
Ceremony
Temptation
Your Silent Face
Bizarre Love Triangle
"Age of Consent" anyone?
Sub-culture
despite the out of time arpeggiator, which, intentional or not, is horrible.
New Order would have been one of the proper great bands if they'd actually had decent lyrics. Sigh.
I love the rubbish lyrics
accidental poetry. not poetic by intention, but so crap that it's, like, outsider poetry.
or when a kid's rubbish picture makes you feel real emotions because it's so unpretentious.
hahaha that's actually a great way to look at it
would have been?
they are!
john robie ruined sub-culture
Ceremony
Loads of other crackers though. Also have a lot of love for the always forgotten 'Mesh'.
Perfect Kiss
Bizarre Love Triangle
Your Silent Face
Leave Me Alone
Vanishing Point
Crystal
trollface.jpg
Nothing wrong with Crystal !
I mean to include it in the OP
Vanishing Point
Closely followed by Ceremony and Bizarre Love Triangle
Vanishing Point
Run
Ceremony, Temptation and Thieves Like Us all candidates though.
Lonesome Tonight
Best and Marsh!
Regret
^easily this
this thread started because I've always said Regret
but lately I've been coming back to Ceremony.
And as soon as you waver just the tiniest bit, it suddenly feels criminal to neglect Temptation and Blue Monday... and then True Faith, Bizarre Love Triangle, Crystal, Fine Time...
And then before you know it, you're thinking that Dreams Never End doesn't warrant such terrible neglect, and that's when you realize you've become a laughing stock because you're now considering album tracks as candidates for best New Order song.
Love Vigilantes
True Faith
well it's Temptation isn't it?
The yearning and one of those songs that gently pulls your throat down and out your chest.
which version, though?
I can never remember which one is the one I like best. it's not the 7" or the 12".
...I think it's the '87 version.
Yeah, the '87 version is the best, I reckon
the original 12" version is the best.
it's more chaotic but that's part of the magic of it
in no universe is that version not their best song
you people saying other shit are crazy
the commonwelath games version was pretty top notch too
it's not my absolute favourite
but Everything's Gone Green never, ever gets the credit it deserves
I'm also a big fan of this
Dream Attack seconded
hibster to thread
ok
ceremony
temptation
leave me alone
tpk
age of consent
hurt
turn
evil dust
kw1 (aka ysf)
& always had a soft spot for 1963 despite its lack of hooky round up a pretty good top ten for me
though could easily have wftsc, regret, crystal, love vigilantes, sunrise, egg, mesh, vanishing point, here to stay & either the john peel session version of paradise from december 98 or the bounty mix of the same song as an alternate ten
actually that session has an awesome version of isolation as well & the version of heart & soul at reading that year was really good if you want jd tracks
Bizarre Love Triangle
A better question is: their best non-single song?
All The Way and Love Less are the answers.
Age of Consent
and Your Silent Face, surely?
and Denial
Age of Consent
All The Way definitely
up there. also Love Vigilantes and Mr Disco.
Bizarre Love Triangle
Regret
Mainly because it came out when I was 18 and carefree. And it was the first song the played the first time I ever saw them live at Reading 98 and it sent shivers down my spine. Still does.
Honourable mentions to Bizarre Love Triangle, Elegia, Temptation and True Faith (which seems rather underrepresented here)
what's wrong with you people?
its clearly this :-

thankfully, I was able to close the tab before the audio started
i'm sorry
i assumed this thread was started by a new order fan
not a new order fan as such, no.
more just a fan of good music.
i tuhink the laughing at album tracks thing
gave away he wasn't a fan of new order
though, that's not to say that I don't love the New Order that I love
yeah
but you should listen to more
besides some of the b-sides/obscurities
Low Life and Brotherhood are the only albums I haven't listened to.
low life is my favourite one
& brotherhood is a 4 out of 5
but listen to low life first
its well worth it
ceremony
might actually be the best song by anyone, ever.
I often think this
I also think it's one of the most perfect records ever - the production is amazing, the packaging is beautiful, it's just perfect in every way.
Elegia (18 min version)
Your Silent Face
Ceremony
Temptation
Very classy choices
Probably my four favourites ( although my order would be different)
Elegia
was conspicuous by its absence so I stuck it at the top. I think my order would be...
Your Silent Face
Ceremony
Elegia
Temptation
How would you call it?
Ceremony
Your Silent Face
Temptation
Elegia
(Although on reflection, Age of Consent should be in there in second place)
Where is the 18 minute version of Elegia to be found?
I think it
First appeared on the 'Retro' boxset in 2002 but also made it onto the more recent deluxe edition of 'Lowlife'. Anyway, listen here (the beginning really reminds me of Goblin which is kind of awesome):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=reAtzVjPxxI
wasnt it only on the 5 disc version of retro?
Ah yeah
It was on that 'Rare' disc you're right. I don't actually own it but it seems near impossible to come by the 5 discer nowadays.
It's apparently on the second disc of the Lowlife reissue as well
But that's hard to get as well.
Found it on You Tube though.
was a surprise to see it back in the set
when they started touring again in belgium year before last
Procession
But way too many amazing songs to be totally sure on my choice...
Thieves Like Us
A moving epic made of neon and rain.
Quite a few for Vanishing Point
I agree.
Perfect Kiss
The version that's on Substance.
Bizzare Love Triangle
Subculture
Temptation
Everything's Gone Green
Fine Time
Blue Monday
Crystal
Run
so, in answer to the OP: no?
Blue Monday
easy to criticise because of its sheer commercial power. At the risk of sounding old, when it came out in '83 it turned a lot of ears and remains, (for me) unsurpassed.
