Rolling Pop Thread 2013 (?)
Is there one already? If so, delete this pile of poop.
Here are the songs that i think are ace this month (I can't really remember further back than that):
Justin Timberlake - Mirror http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U41KPUfOSFk
Super catchy but its 8 minutes long? wtf. I turn it off after I've had my fill of the song around the 3:30 mark.
Ke$ha - Die Young http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOubzHCUt48
Its well good and I don't care what anyone says about the abomination that is Ke$ha.
Bastille - Pompeii (or is it the other way round?) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F90Cw4l-8NY - more like indie or something isn't it? Still good.
PLEASE recommend some more. There were some ace ones in the thread last year.

...
hello
(I hate the music forum - its scary)
Not to be contrary, but none of those are good
Bastille are like some sort of indie YMA6, Mirror is really limp sounding (wish Timbaland would either fuck off or at least stop using crappy acoustic guitar sounds), Kesha is Kesha.
I actually think this year has been pretty shit for pop music so far. I actually quite like the chorus to the Little Mix single. That's quite worrying.
Get out of my thread if you're going to have a different opinion to me.
Do you have any examples of a relatively good pop song from the year so far?
Not really proper mainstream pop apart from that Little Mix tune
AlunaGeorge and Chvrches are basically pop music, they're both really great. But probably not right for this thread.
The new Olly Murs tune that sounds like Lost Art Of Keeping A Secret is alright. Actually it's not really is it. I just like Olly Murs despite disliking his music.
Never heard of this Chvrches thing
Link?
I don't get the Olly Murs hate. Yes he is a tosser in a tribly but Troublemaker was a great song (and fun fact - apprently him and FLO RIDA have never met despite being on a song together)
Scottish electronic pop stuff
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JyqemIbjcfg
I went to see the Graham Norton show being filmed the other day and really enjoyed Olly Murs' performance. Would happily sit through a full set. But would never listen to his music in any other setting I guess. He comes across as a top bloke though, that was still the best season of X Factor. Stacey <3
Listening to that song now
Sounds good, I will check out more.
I'd only really listen to Olly Murs when I'm working out. I find pop music has a better pace and is more upbeat than some other stuff I'd listen to otherwise.
The Olly Murs song sounds like an early 2000 Robbie Williams off-cut.
Die Young is still great imo.
It sounds like a theme tune from some Disney Channel kids show
Wouldn't know about that ;)
:D well played
We were all young once, Shippers.
Still don't understand Justin Timberlake. So boring.
Not much good around so far this year, every time I turn on music telly then it's that fucking Will.i.am and Britney song.
Oh shit, didn't read your initial post
Yes, Die Young by Kesha is smashing. Think there was a thread about it.
That song is so awkward
They're trying to fit words into a space that doesn't fit so its a struggle to sing along with it.
That new Girls Aloud song has really grown on me despite not really liking it much on the first few listens.
It's not helped by Britney's absolute wtf British (?!) accent
Also not helped by being the worst song of all time.
Harlem Shake
Harlem Shake was fun for about 10 seconds
I have listened to it once but its not for me.
Its fun yeah
was about in lots of clubs middle of last year and also fun for about 10 seconds, kinda went away and the next thing I knew it was a legit pop hit and internet meme. I like it when tracks like that get in the charts its a nice change really, kinda like when Mr Oizo did it.
The song/video that popularized the dance still sounds as awesome as ever
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=az7pn5zfUsU
Like this a lot...
we did a version of that at work the other day
great bants
People in work wanted us to do one
I was like
nahh
Oh God...
There's approximately 150,000,000+ other threads
for you to check out on DiS.
Oh God...
People like different genres of music - SHOCKING.
Meowington, did you ever listen to the Carly Rae Jep album?
I haven't actually
I got caught up in Taylor Swift's RED for a bit. Is it any good? I thought she might just be a one hit wonder!
I love it, all of it. Well, except that one with the Owl City guy.
Bubblegum done right.
Tonight Im Getting Over You just got a video. Kinda Max Martin by numbers but its still a massive song.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBOE1aUNZVo
Get the iTunes edition, has five extra songs that are all good too.

Woodkid - I Love You
www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQu8FOjJXdI
I heard MS MR do a cover of LCD's Dance Yrself Clean
was pretty good.
Have otherwise heard nothing by them.
kyary pamyu pamyu - ninjya re bang bang
http://youtu.be/teMdjJ3w9iM
<3
my 2012 version was the same
series of bedwetting posts and then people posting indie tracks under the assumption melody = pop.
Like these guys?
H?SHTAG$ - Don't Call It #BlogPop
http://youtu.be/h85ZdlIe-Go
TBF AlunaGeorge and Katy B are pop now.
I guess we've never talked about Locked out of Heaven on here
I really like it.
I found out about this song when he performed on some new years eve tv show
then I got hooked on it.
I can't describe what I like about it but its got something to do with that little sound that sounds a bit like a chirping bird.
dog barking*
Not the woof bit
the bit before the woof bit
the
uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh WOOF
That new Nelly song Hey Porsche.
really weird to hear him doing just straight up pop, no rap verse at all.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fh1ZFNoREjg
No plaster?!
haha
Nick Grimshaw played this on the radio this morning and he was like, coming up we've got that awful new Nelly song. His producer asked him not to call it awful and he went but it is awful, and the producer man was like yeah but it's awful in a Flo Rida kind of way. MADE ME LAUGH
Any love for Nicole Sherzinger - Boomerang?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xoRrGsgohYE
No, it sounds like Rebecca Black ffs
Genuinely terrible.
I remembered I quite like that new Taylor Swift one, I Knew You Were Trouble. Until the dubstep wubs come in that is.
Psssh, sounds nothing like Rebecca Black!
I Knew You Were Trouble is good, even when the 'dubstep' part comes in. The whole album is pretty good actually. Some fillers that sound very classic Taylor Swift but other thats are new and catchy.
Was this you, meo?
"i don't care if people don't like it! BUT THIS SONG AND NICOLE MADE MY DAY! lyrics are amazing, and her voice is strong and powerful that makes me think that i'm perfect! SO I THINK THAT'S A GOOD THING! so bitches! stop hating! NICOLE IS THE BEST AND BECAUSE OF HER I LOVE MUSIC! she knows how to be sexy and how to be the best! i don't know why we don't hear her music here in USA, I REALLY LOVE HER! LOVE U NICOLE! keep doing your music! This song and Try with? me are the best! u got everything!"
I've been rumbled
It's ok but I've never bought into Nicole really.
That beat is basic af though. Hook is pretty good.
Ha bmr this is NOTHING like rebecca black you crazy.
New Taylor Swift video makes me find her really annoying
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AgFeZr5ptV8
They are her real friends. Do you think they did this video to prove she's not a bitch who hates other bitches?
I've already started the Taylor Swift backlash
She's a tit.
is that the macklemore douche on the bike with her at the end?
man she never shuts up about hipsters and cool kids, major issues there.
I don't like Chipmunk and Wiley is more funny than talented
but this is actually good:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEjayXdwVqY
His pop stuff has been kinda fun of late
He is mega funny always has been with lines like 'I’m a street star / There’s no set time I have my tea at' in the middle of grime tracks.
that tune makes me utterly miserable
wiley gets a pass for life for shit like eskimo 2/ice rink tho
and for being wiley obvz
eugh. This shit is horrible.
Thing is Wiley can make really great pop tunes but they never seem to do as well as his terrible ones. If there's any justice If You're Going Out, I'm Going Out Too would have been a number 1:
http://youtu.be/pTBB70BhBNA
Also the original of Never Be Your Woman is still incredible, so much better than the Shy FX version that got released as a single, though I like that too.
http://youtu.be/-TrhAkXQmIc
the one about eating a slush puppy last summer was kinda fun
straight up love that one
got some strange looks when I went round singing ON MY BODY, ON MY BODY, PUT YOUR HANDS UP ON MY BODY tho
MSK (og sugababes) on Kendrick's 'Swimming Pools'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GAG1_tvxtyQ
on a constant hype that these three are back together (and working with dev blood orange is a SIQ bonus too). their voices are just so dope and they work together so damn well. first listen i wasn't too keen on the chorus cos i'm so used to how good swimming pools is but it's grown on me really quick. verses are absolutely spot on from the top tho, love the harmonies towards the end.
i shat the bed when they sang the actual chorus from swimming pools at the end too. it's so bloody uplifting.
The original was actually one of my least favorite songs on the
album but in the last few weeks I have really grown to love it.
This version sounds nice. That last bit was the best part.
that's so cool
i had no idea they got together again
OMG.
This is really really great. Been so hyped to hear what they come up with since I heard they were back together then they come with this. Killed it.
Maybe i'll go listen to the first Sugarbabes album AGAIN.
Soul Sound is legit one of my favourite tracks ever
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBkkyKm6ixw
So dreamy and chilled
Cool this.
This sounded awesome: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Kiki7sofCUg
But then this, not so much: https://soundcloud.com/popjustice/mutya-keisha-siobhan-boys
(Also, who uploads a 3 second clip?!)
The trailer for the new Pet Shop Boys album is really quite good
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNliJ66WbbU
Generic Guetta-ish floor filler that's strangely good
www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxxstCcJlsc
This is good, I like the chants.
The Guetta drops are kind of unfortunate.
It hits all the standard requirements for a floor-filler
but the lead vocal and the chants are just great. Monkey and typewriters I guess, but still a class song.
Best song of the year ayooooo
Robin Thicke - Blurred Lines ft TI & Pharrell
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyDUC1LUXSU
This is just... wut?
This is the song JT wishes he had on his new album.
TI is so great in this video
i don't think robin thicke is as cool as he thinks he is
but it's a good song
and pharrell in the video :D
Pharrell's outfit(s) >>>
I think he's cooler than he thinks he is!
ROBIN THICKE HAS A BIG D
according to the video
I love when pharrell points at the sheep
And the song
It's much better if you play it in a background tab.
No one wants to see a white, middle-aged plumber trying to be Prince, do they?
semi this
except then you'd miss pharrell being amazing
Thicke has been doing this stuff for years!
I love his schtick, so slinky. Love when he teams up with Pharrell. So many great songs in his back catalog, too.
The R&B world def appreciates him more than the pop world.
i love taylor swift
http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4425059
SNSD's I Got A Boy throws away more ideas than most songs try to hold on to:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wq7ftOZBy0E
I never thought I'd ever say this, but I quite enjoyed the new Ke$ha album
my friend tends to put it on when I go around. That song that mentions her "golden trans-am" gets stuck in my head.
My friends have a video of me dancing on a table in a club to Tik-Tok when it first came out. I hated her with a passion when that song first came out so they black-mail me every now and then by threatening to upload it to the internet.
I know it's not really new pop, but I've been listening to a lot of old school Robbie Williams lately. I think he's underrated.
am I allowed to like that Macklemore song?
it's annoying, like some meme song my nephew would like (he does like it, that's how I heard it), but the guy who raps is a competent rapper and not totally loathsome, and it's not just generic club lyrics.
-
hey, that Disclosure ft. Alunageorge tune in the top ten, ace. actual good pop. well, it's vocal housey bass music, but it's undisputably pop, right?
Thrift Store is a novelty song.
It's kinda lightweight fun but pretty obnoxious after a few listens.
FUCKING HATE IT
can't escape it
and i want to punch his stupid frat face
Yeah I feel you.
I'M IN, LET'S MERK HIM.
most pop these days and the people who made it makes me well angry
this one bypassed my dickhead filter.
wouldn't seek it out, but it's alright really.
*make
The charts are full of crap, it's true.
Nothing to get angry about, though.
The worst chart movement at the mo is the Mumford/Lumineers/ofMice&Men stuff, save your ire for that dook.
I'd take http://youtu.be/LPgvNlrBfb0 over any of that any time.
don't know who 2/3 of those are, pal
I wouldn't say anything makes me angry anymore. I'm too weary to get mad at anything.
think the worst pop song I've heard in recent times was some unbearable man/woman smugathon of a young adult contemporary '''love''' song about two irredeemably dull people, two corresponding bodies with insipid voices urging each other let them see beneath their beautiful/perfect, presumably blandish each other's clothes off.
*to, **to
**presumably in an effort to
he can't even just be a meme rapper
also tries his hand at rapping about SRS ISSUES.
fucking love this shitty kiddy r&b song for 12 year old twitter trolls
THE WAY by Ariana Grande
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sV0S8qWSy0
white boy rapping can go away though.
heard 'Scream & Shout' not wasted in a club for the first time a couple of days ago. sooo bad.
haha she is totally aping Mariah Carey with her tone/cadence!
Everything about this is 90s Mariah.
I like it though, minus Mac Miller though obv.
fuck that bit before the chorus kicks in is shit hot
with the handclaps
I GOT A BAD BOY I MUST ADMIT IT
ok i love this
This is ridiculously good
Little Mix - How Ya Doin' ft. Missy Elliott
http://youtu.be/ma-7dTArDtQ
Great song
Too many "sassy" faces in the video.
This is my favourite pop song of the year, I think.
A band called Bells Atlas, reminds me of tune-yards a little bit. So perfect.
http://www.goldflakepaint.co.uk/totd-083-bells-atlas-loving-you-down/
stop it
Actually this.
"show me the wayyyyyyy to your hiding place"
http://www.goldflakepaint.co.uk/fresh-licks-sza-ice-moon/
Lulu James 'Closer'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVtuluGSG7Y
Jessie Ware / Katy B - core but about 50 times more stylish. it is absolutely amazing
Annie – Tube Stops and Lonely Hearts
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=vW4pTe0yRAc
sounds a bit uk funky
really good
new jessie ware (aware its about six weeks old now) is her best single yet
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u03f5Wnwff0
