Gender confusion with vocalists
Inspired by my shock at finding out (through the Pitchfork review) that the lead singer of the band Rhye is actually a man. I suppose listening to it with the knowledge already you may think I was being daft but on first listen I didn't even debate it in my head. So...what other instances of this are there? I seem to remember thinking the vocalist for Azeda Booth was female before I read up on them too..

There was only one topic of conversation in the playground the day after their first TOTP appearance in 1982.

Remember everyone in our house watching that TOTP and the conversation being the same.
The Paybacks
used to think it was the guy who sang for Beach House
When I first heard commander Venus I thought it was a girl singing
Turns out Conor Oberst's voice just hadn't broken yet.
The two obvious childhood ones from car tapes
Nina Simone and Neil Young

I thought the vocalist from HTRK was male
She has an androgynous voice.

I don't know if it's just Gene Wilder and I, but when I first heard Randy Newman, I thought he was black.
I thought the guy singing on this track was a women at first, but I had no clue who the band were or anything, just thought the song was nice.

First time I heard Sufjan Stevens
I wasn't quite sure which gender he was.
I remember reading a Coal Chamber gig review back in the day
Where the reviewer had a go at Dez Fafara for not doing enough to assert her femininity as not many women lead a metal band...don't think he's caused the same level of gender confusion in Devildriver!
Lower Dens
Hearing 'Brains' threw me right off.

In a similar way to Beach House, the vocals sound really androgynous. She has an incredible voice tho

Death Vessel
Big time - thought it was a 10-year-old girl.
Shocked about Rhye too!

The Weeknd
When all I'd heard was 'What You Need' and 'High For This', I didn't even suspect it was a guy and assumed they just blurred gender in the lyrics.

Standard 'thought Brian Molko was a woman' post
First time I heard Beach House I thought it was a guy with a high pitched voice.
Also first time I heard 'California Girls' by Magnetic Fields, I thought that was a man too.
he's quite attractive, considering
UGH, well this thread is embarassing you bunch of bastard binary voice fascists
I think you've missed the point

When I was a youngster me and my mate went to see Rush
on a whim as we were in London and we were offered cheap tickets by a tout when walking outside Wembley arena. We had no idea who Rush were but it was only a couple of quid so went anyway. We were right at the very back, and this was late 80's so pre-giant screens. We spend the next couple of months convinced Geddy Lee was a women and even when I found out the vocalist was called Geddy and saw pictures of him I still had no idea he was a man
I wonder if he speaks like an ordinary guy?
I know him, and he does.
Autolux
First time I heard a Puressence record
my mate told me it was Alison Moyet singing and I believed him.
The Knife
Thought the bloke was singing then found out it was Karin's vocals pitched down.

Pretty sure they were a three-piece, actually.

Ooh, 'Big Love' by Fleetwood Mac...
Has Lindsey Buckingham's "love grunts" pitchshifted up to sound like Stevie Nicks!
See also (less convincingly) Morrissey on Bigmouth Strikes Again - wasn't really ever fooled by that though :)
Talking of Fleetwood Mac and gender confusion
Took me ages as a kid to compute that Lindsay was the man and Stevie was the woman...
I remember thinking that David Ford of Easyworld . . .
. . . was a woman first few times I heard Bleach. May even have bought the album of the back of that to try and rectify the paucity of female artists in my collection at the time.
Brian Molko
Hearing Bruise Pristine by Placebo for the first time many years ago, I was convinced he was a woman.
Turin Brakes
not necessarily a popular band to be bringing into the discussion, but what the hey
I thought Robbie Williams was a woman when he sang No Regrets.
I'm not even making this up, for some reason I thought he was Sharleen Spiteri and he was singing not "No regrets" but "You're insane"
I remember accidentally catching the end of The Organ's set at Cardiff Barfly once
I remember being deeply smitten with the singer well before I'd established whether it was a boy or a girl.
