Music with women in
So it's International Women's Day, and I started thinking about all the music I love that women have written and/or played. Then I got bored of posting Youtube links to the largely unresponsive world of Twitter, so I thought I'd start up a thread on here.
I haven't really gone for cultural touchstones, just songs that I love. This is pretty much exclusively from the indie rock canon, since that's just the way my tastes run, but I'm sure you delightful lot will broaden it out.
Anyway, here's a few to start:
Des Ark - Ashley's Song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KG8F8g2t5uo
Land of Talk - It's Okay http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m53--yTPQNk
Jawbox - Savory http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFvz1JQAPgQ
Pretty Girls Make Graves - All Medicated Geniuses http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFUoJ0AA3mU
Rilo Kiley - Spectacular Views http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1AHkgWeXwo
Audrey - Big Ships http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOnhYmLK438
Waxahatchee - Bathtub http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_BQ9m0kOeo
Autolux - Sugarless http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0uGt1n3xERo
True Widow - Skull Eyes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=82qoobOs1go
I'm at work, so no Spotify, but if someone fancied knocking up a playlist...

Can't think of any!
Current new favourites
Flava D - Hold On
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ealdQG_zDos
Emma - Dream Phone
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXeBZ-UnZ4w
Emma has an epic amount of dubs which all sound so good, but thats the only track shes released really. Gotta check out Dusk & Blackdown's show on Rinse to hear more at the moment.
Nice one
On that front (sort of), just remembered this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVZH6B8Je-Y
came in this thread to post emma too
her stuff is utterly incredible. haven't been so instantly moved by an artist's individual sound since, oh i don't know, burial or someone equally hyperbolic. for real tho, her showcase in the d&b xmas special is essential listening. brilliant and melodic take on grime and funky.
while im ere while im ere
fatima al qadiri made my favourite record released last year on a similar synthy grime tip: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAZI4aCJYTWTFBDc13t9eEALkCDIbZxZz
EMMA
Really reminds me of Darkstar in that Need You, Adiy's Girl Is A Computer kinda way. They aint doing that sound anymore so I'm glad someone is picking it up in their own way. Its that melting digital harpsicord kind of thing, madness.
Love that Fatima Al Qadiri EP.
I hope this doesn't end up like some kind of patronising compilation album called, like 'Girls ROCK!'
but here's some of my favourite females in music:
Julie Christmas

Afrirampo:

Really happy to see Kylesa and CTTS in there! More from the heavier vanguard:
Vales - http://valesband.bandcamp.com/
Ravachol - http://ravachol.bandcamp.com/
Mahria - http://mahriaskram.bandcamp.com/album/self-titled
A lot of this is new to me

All those bands are ace

Rolo Tomassi- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkH0Yoj9fsc
Landveraad- http://landverraad.bandcamp.com/album/landverraad-sloth-2
And for something completely different, Hop Along-
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCZKC6x9zlU
Completely obsessed
with the Hop Along record at the moment, nice one!
Also recently discovered the Crutchfield sisters' output after reading a comparison of Hop Along to them. Got Waxahatchee above, so here's Swearin' and PS Eliot:
http://swearin.bandcamp.com/

How
am I only just hearing Julie Christmas for the first time?! 30 seconds in and it's fucking brilliant!
She's absolutely brilliant
Check out the short-lived Josh Graham collaboration Battle Of Mice:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1CkdF7uoKk
which I think is one of my all-time favourite metal albums, totally flawless. And Made Out Of Babies:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cnmedj0fYTQ
who lasted until Christmas went solo last year.
How could I forget the mighty Carla Bozulich?!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1L2giL_RH4

Austra - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8LJtMrhb558
new track put out on Domino's Soundcloud yesterday too. http://soundcloud.com/dominorecordco/austra-home
thread title's really making me laugh for some reason.
I tried and tried
but I couldn't for the life of me think of anything else to call it...
Me too, but not as much as 'The Womb (Essex)'
St Vincent?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahnoLi_KFcg
I wass wondering how long it would take for St Vincent to come up
Unbelievable guitarist.
By the way, when is International Men's Day?
Think it's the day after the MOWO awards
:D
november 19th
every day
Speaking of Jawbox,
I'm sure you could put together a mighty fine list of bands with their sole female member on bass:
Pixies
My Vitriol
Smashing Pumpkins
Sonic Youth
Johnny Foreigner
A Perfect Circle (first album, anyway)
...there are probably others
Superchunk
The Thermals
Silversun Pickups (they were good once...)
Latter day
Future Of The Left
And as such
Million Dead
Talking Heads
Serge Gainsbourg - Love On The Beat
www.youtube.com/watch?v=82kS4ChgWq4
Probs not the best thing for International Women's Day though.
Actually, Gainsbourg is usually pretty brilliant with women's vocals
Bonnie & Clyde
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKfBJMIANsM
Je Suis rhubarb rhubarb rhubarb
www.youtube.com/watch?v=--BTGqJmhow
Loads more that I can't be arsed searching youtube for. There's one on Melody Nelson which is just a girl squealing and giggling to a funky backing track.
always loved Bonnie & Clyde
Me too
Prefer Ford Mustang but couldn't find it on youtube.
Female fronted doom/black metal from 'murica
Ludicra
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BFUAOLXu-s
Dark Castle
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cioPOrTj1_I
Subrosa
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzYqGAzunME
Ah I see you already flagged up SubRosa
apparently there should be a new album by the end of the year
Excellent
The strings really put them a level above most doomy sort of bands
ctrl + f 'the raincoats'
hmm.

eww
this thread is making me uneasy, yeah
Laurel Halo - Sunlight on the Faded
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPz-LPbIbQE
Its everything I wanted the album to be in some ways.
Inga Copeland - A&E
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bX2fIt99wEo
And some Hype Williams stuff I can never remember the name of.
ctrl + f 'skunk anansie'
I'm shocked.
I got a "La Femme" (apologies to women everywhere) playlist
but the truth is that I love female vocals, and well over half my library is music with female vocalists.
this is weird
Regular Fries - King Kong
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IX63MYVKT_M&feature=player_detailpage#t=128s
Now, Now - But I do
http://youtu.be/TLIzCl_senM
The kick at the end is huge
Aw yeah
'Threads' was one of my favourites last year. This is a genius bit of guitar music http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfi_WUxfKP4
Eww... this is weird...doesn't everyone have a lot of records made by or with women these days? It's not like they're rare like pandas or snow tigers...
Rachel Goswell (Slowdive)- Coastline
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-3GefOJ2AU
This is a little hidden gem.
Dot Allison - Close your eyes
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u65RxiqTPXk
Asobi Seksu - Perfectly Crystal
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_DdaoFCyv4
I like her voice. Don't care if you don't. It fits with shoegazey-pop just right
Gemma Hayes - Tear in my side
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOER88cyj3U
Back when she wrote more interesting songs than she does now.
That Gemma Hayes album
was probably the first record I ever bought that wasn't made entirely by men, except maybe Surfer Rosa. Also the first show I ever went to...
She is amazing, been late discovering her...!
Second for Waxahatchee
http://www.nyctaper.com/2013/03/waxahatchee-february-8-2013-music-hall-of-williamsburg-flacmp3streaming/
From the same site I've laid ears on Lemuria, Bleeding Rainbows and Screaming Females in recent posts, quite worth a listen to.
it's a shame that her sound narrowed down a lot
after the first album
oh and forgot - maybe my favourite female vocals ever
PP Arnold - The First Cut is The Deepest
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1-g5VG2pWg
international womens day exists because people like all of you in this thread
finally
I have always known DiS was a hot bed of misogyny
There's always some hot misogyny going on in this bed, baby.
Dunno about that
I remember realising all of a sudden when I was a lot younger that I had almost no female-fronted music in my collection and realising something was very odd about that.
Totally different situation now but surely a thread like this can't do any harm if it encourages people to check out some different music that isn't being promoted by a heavily misogynist music industry, surely?
IT'S PC GONE MAD
