Paramore
"Since Green Day's 1994 break-through album Dookie , very few rock/pop/punk/alt acts have penned such a consistent string of undeniably great songs. To these ears, the song-writing is of a Rumours-era Fleetwood Mac standard, and if "emo" was a more critic-friendly genre, then the commentariat would have cooed and cookoo'd that Brand New Eyes was a truly special and significant record. Not that the band particularly needed the snobs and the cynics to sell millions of records and tickets..."
Not my words, Carol, the words of DrownedInSound Magazine('s editor/founder Sean Adams).

Paramore
yeah, i like paramore
not so keen on the prospect of them re-writing the first We Are Scientist album though...
Re: the pic on the front page & their new video
when did Hayley Williams join CocoRosie?
Photo is from Leeds last year supporting The Cure.
Video is quite Fifth Element, isn't it? The video went online a week after I chatted to them, so couldn't ask about that (piece was embargoed until this week).
Should Evanescence be critically reappraised too?
have you guys heard linkin park?
totally transcendent dude. like revolver era beatles standard songwriting
are you being sarcastic mate?
hard to tell
not one iota
not one, buddy
They have had their fair share of pop gold
The likes of Brick By Boring Brick and Now are great songs, but to that end they've also written a fair amount of godawful shite like Crushcrushcrush and The Only Exception. So yeah, they can be alright I guess.
I errr...
actually kind of like The Only Exception, it's almost like a 21st century power ballad.
Crushcrushcrush is one of my all-time favourite songs!
Hmm
I much prefer The Only Exception to Brick by Boring Brick. In fact, that, Careful and Ignorance are the only really good songs off that album... and the Nick Drake-y song (Misguided Ghosts?)
There isn't a single track on Brand New Eyes that I skip.
I'd agree with most of that.
:/
She's not going to sleep with any of you.
Paramore always seemed a few years too late to me. Would've fitted in more with musical trends at the turn of the century, their sound just sounded tired to me from the start.
When have undeniably great songs needed to be 'on trend'?
'Undeniably' is a strong word.
Their sound just seemed so in thrall to early noughties rock that it would always be difficult to have the same impact as some of those bands. Like why many people now don't have much time for The Courteeners, Viva Brother, etc.
The style might be nodding back that way, but the production is far more sophisticated than it seems on the surface. Can't wait to hear what the dude who produced the last M83 album and was bassist in NiN and Beck has done with this new album - 'Now' seemed quite straight-ahead compared to some of the tracks I've heard.
I think the fact that they're few years after a boom in similar (mostly, inferior) stands in their favour.
Kinda like: "No boys, *this* is how it's done."
@in_limbo
not worth it
just sayin'. yet here I am, commenting. um, ... who likes tacos?
i both hate and love them
the real problem is they rip off all the ideas that all the early deep elm bands were using years and years ago. thing is, they do it so well that i still end up liking it
Just to weigh in a bit, Paramore are literally just a glossy pop band
Cannot understand any weightier praise being heaped upon them. They have absolutely no substance. To compare them to old emo bands is baffling to me. When Geoff Rickly was writing about his friends dying and referencing David Foster Wallace it was clear to see why his music was meaningful. When Hayley Williams is singing crap like 'There's a time and a place to die/but this ain't it' it just comes across as completely soulless, trying to fit 'death' and 'war' imagery into pop tracks to make them sound edgy.
when i reference old deep elm bands, by the way
i'm more talking about the way songs are structured and the tone of the snare drums and things like that. it's all these little things that used to crop up on a lot of the early appleseed cast and planes mistaken for stars albums that paramore seem to use a lot. but they do it well
