Album openers
What are your favourite album openers? I have a blog: http://mrfraserblog.blogspot.co.uk/ and just put mine up.
It's difficult. There are some great 'track 1's, but they're not necessarily the best way to open an album.

i find it hard to say anything is a better album opener than
only shallow
This thread comes around a lot
And every time it does, the same song leaps immediately to mind:

man, you should get your keyboard fixed
they're pretty cheap, just get a new one.
I know it's pretty cliched to say, but Disorder is pretty perfect
Interpol's Untitled does the job nicely
Rarely gets a mention
But I love the way Tonight We Mean It opens the Dismemberment Plan album Is Terrified as though it had already begun. Sets the pace of the album perfectly.
Nine Acre Court on Charlatans s/t is my stock answer to this.
YouTube description is a fair summary.

Tool - The Grudge
My favouritetune, on my favourite album by my favourite band.
I was in Canada when Lateralus was released. Rushed to a record store to buy the cd.
Got back to where I was staying and put it it on the cd player. I'd been waiting 5 years for this album. Virtually no press for it, so I had no idead what to expect.
I put it on, 1st song is The Grudge. I replayed it 5 times before I got to the 2nd track.
It still gives me goosebumps now when I listen to it.
Other faves
Soundgarden - Rusty Cage (Badmotorfinger)

The Grudge is an immense track. Stinkfist nearly made the list too.
Yep. Was never gonna choose any other user name!
Stinkfist would make the list too.
Intolerance and Vicarious are also crackers.
Good call on The Grudge.
Also The Hollow by APC, such a punch to it.
The Fear on This Is Hardcore

Number 1 - Packs of three by Arab Strap
Quite obviously
Like A Rolling Stone
Hands by Four Tet on Rounds
beautiful album opener- quite stately in its elegance. Don't think it would fit in with the rest of the album if it wasn't up first.
Also Forever on Snivilisation by Orbital just would not fit in to the mood of the album if it was anything other than the first track.
The Classical
Opening The Fall's Hex Enduction Hour
The Bronx - Heart Attack American
Good call
Only recently bought that album.
My Name is Jonas
and Tired of Sex
The Boxer Rebellion - Flight/Flashing Red Light Means Go/No Harm
The Envy Corps - Wires & Wool
Doves - Firesuite
The Verve - Star Sail
Mew - Am I Wry? No
Explosions in the Sky - Last Known Surroundings
Mono - Ashes in the Snow
Uyama Hiroto - 81summer
Just far too many to mention really; I could go on and on. Best not to.
Another Boxer Rebellion fan!!
Cool. Good choice.
I think
Regular John, Feel Good Hit of the Summer & You Make Me Feel like I Ain't Worth a Dollar are 3 great consecutive album openers for QOTSA.
Also Cherub Rock.
My 16 year old self says...
Linoleum off Punk in Drublic by NOFX. Played that record to death many years ago, and the start of the album was just so electrifying.
My 30 year old is now going to listen to it again for the first time in years.
THAT'S ME ON THE STREET WITH A VIOLIN UNDER MY CHIN
Cold Cave - The Great Pan Is Dead
is pretty ace. I know some people struggled to get past it to the rest of the album it's that good.

My 16 year old self would say
Marilyn Manson - Irresponsible Hate Anthem
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nXCZhqTIps
or Blur - Beetlebum
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WAXnqjUfal4
Let's Go Crazy
Jesus Lizard - Boilermaker
Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - Bellbottoms
triffic!

free your mind and your ass will follow
maggot brain
Planet Telex from The Bends is one of my favourites
The State I Am In - Belle And Sebastian
Best album opener ever, bar none.
Nice!
It's a better album than If You're Feeling Sinister imo.
Titus Andronicus - A More Perfect Union
So many good ones already mentioned too.
Cardiacs - Dirty Boy
/thread
Fugazi - Turnover
British Sea Power - It Ended On An Oily Stage
Pavement - Silence Kit
Faith No More - From Out Of Nowhere
Holes - Mercury Rev
A perfectly pitched opener which sets the scene for Deserter's Songs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYe5Q-oMEME
Silver - Echo & Bunnymen
Did You Miss Me - The Cooper Temple Clause
far and away the best, the twinkling notes, the high pitch noise, the menacing bass line, mmmmmmmmmmmmm
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVtucRWO-Ac
Argh!
I feel ashamed of myself for neglecting to mention this song in my post. And it's not even the best TCTC album opener.
The Rainbow - Talk Talk
Robert Wyatt - Sea Song
Shine On You Crazy Diamond - Pink Floyd
The Black Amnesias - Hope Of The States
A Beautiful Shape - Six By Seven
first ones which sprang to mind were
Elbow - any day now and David Bowie - Station to Station
which made me think of Station Approach off Leaders of the Free World.
And now I feel like Mark Radcliffe.
ALSO
Spiritualized are pretty good at this sort of thing:
You Know It's True
Medication
Ladies & Gentlemen
The one song you haven't thought about
and yet the most obvious one:
"Welcome to the jungle" by Guns n' Roses
